hey all
I'm planning on ordering my 1st MM guitar this fall. I plan on getting an Axis. so I contacted my local music store via email with the specs I wanted on my Axis, so I would get a price on the guitar. The music store emailed back with the price, but said that their supplier had said I couldn't ask for one of the options I wanted on the Axis. This option was a quilt maple top, the email stated:
"our supplier sent the following message:
We cannot specify quilt on the Axis."
just wondering is this true, that I can't specify a quilt maple top when I place my order later this fall? ( cause I really would love to own an Axis with a quilt top, but if I can't, a flame top is amazing looking as well!)

To the best of my knowledge, it's true. You can specify color for your maple top, but whether you get quilt or flame, and to what degree, is a matter of luck or random chance.

Here's a quote from Pete DuBaldo, one of the highly trusted dealers who frequents the forum here:

Right now you can specify flame/quilt on BFR models & the 25th Anniversary models. Customer selection of figure is not currently available on standard models.

I agree... if the top is that important then go with a BFR Axis. But, its not like EBMM makes a bad top on their regular Axis guitars.

both are killer tops, but not every top has the same character if you know what i mean.

but its about how it plays/sounds & and the way you want it, forget weather or not you get flamed or quilt since im pretty sure either one you get is gona be a beauty! & you'll treasure it forever :)

of course the other thing to consider is that this will be your first Ball but not your last Ball... everyone here will tell you its an addiction. It truly is about how it plays and sounds with MusicMan... the beauty part is really an added bonus! There is nothing stopping you from getting a flamed or quilt top (depending on what you get now) somewhere down the road.

requesting quilt or flame is only available on the Ball Family Reserve models. Blame deforestation not Music Man. Although thanks to the BFR line the quality of figured timbers is even better on the standard product line

Let us know where you end up. I'd love to get a BFR to add to the mix, but as an ASS w/ MM90. Doesn't appear this is an option. So looking at adding ASSMM90 or BFR ASS.
