First time poster here. A friend recently acquired a Sterling AX40, which he asked me to set up for him. I really like this guitar and I'm going to see if he's interested in selling it to me. In any event, the guitar did not come with the tremolo bar. Does anyone know if a standard Floyd Rose bar will work, or does it have to be Sterling?

No, regular Floyd rose bar will not work. The threads are different. Just replace the entire arm assembly.

Thank you for the reply. Then I will seek out a Sterling tremolo bar. Out of curiosity, have you played both an Axis and an AX40? If so, how did you find the neck profile in comparison? The AX40 has an asymmetrical neck profile, and I'm wondering if it's the same as the profile of the Axis.

Unfortunately no. I have an EVH model and the AX40 and the neck profiles are different, but I like both and each are great necks to me.
