My family owned a Music Store from the time I was born and was an EBMM dealer. I used Slinky's forever and still LOVE them. I found the Sadowsky Nickels to be a bit quieter and smoother feeling after I got a set on a Sadows7^ bass. I owned a bunch of Sads and they all came with his strings and I guess I got used to them. I actually have a set of Coated Slinkys and several sets of various EBMM strings including some flats here now and I should probably try them on one of my SR 5s. I LOVED the Classic but I only played it for a few minutes before I jerked the strings off of it and put on my standard strings. This is just something that I do as a ritual when I get a new bass...

I KNOW IT IS PROBABLY PREMATURE AND DUMB.....It is just something that I have done for the last several years...I usually get a bass and pull it out of the case, play it for a few minutes, put on a set of straplocks, then change the strings over to the Sad Blue Nickels...

When I got my Fiesta Red Classic I FREAKED out when I realized that standard wraps would not work with the neck through. I had some Sadows&^ XLs and put those on and did a quick setup and intonation adjustment due to the tension difference and went right out to a gig so I did not really give the original strings much of a chance. I dug the way they sound I had just gotten used to the smoother feeling Sad.

For anyone who may have compared them...Is there a smoother feeling Nickel Ernie Ball that feels about the same as the Sadowsky Blue Nickel I know there are a LOT of different EBMM strings available but I have never tried them all. I ONLY play EBMM basses now and I would love to be able to string them up with EBMM strings as well!

Thanks for the help!

Peace,

T

I have the coated nickel slinkies on my Big Al 4 SSS. I find them smoother than "regular" slinkies. I like the tone of them better than the Sad-Nickels.

Same here - and I'm in no way slagging the Sadowsky Nickels. Those are made by LaBella to Roger's specs and are decent strings, but I definitely - if I'm going to play rounds - favor the coated nickel Slinkys.

And if you like a smoother, less zingy string, you just might want to try some EB Group III Flats - if you haven't tried them already. I'm a long-time user of "Acme" brand flats, but the Group IIIs have brought me back from the brink of disaster (with BP).

I've been on the string merry-go-round for many years (and I'm not just saying this because of the forum), but for rounds, the eb coated slinkies have met, and exceeded, my expectations.

Jack, can you comment more on the difference between Group III and Group II flats --
they're lighter guage -- what's the main difference that makes?

I'm also a roundwound user looking for less zing on a SR5 (slinkies are too much zing for me) --
