The almost "definitive" answer on the D-Sonic type pickups, per Dan @ EB:
Right now it looks to be that the D-Sonic style pickups will hitting stores in a few months.

So - basically for those who have already ordered a JP, it should have the current pickups on it. If you order one sometime in the future, it will have the version of the D-Sonic that JP has been playing with. Yes the pickups are being changed as of "now" but the change wont visibly hit the streets for about 3 months because of all the current backorders.

Welcome aboard!

what are the original pickups? custom jobs? and if so what are they closest to? (I own one and still have yet to figure out what they sound like to me)

The pickups in the original spec EBMM JP guitar are custom DiMarzio jobs. The bridge is based on the Steve's Special and the neck is based on the Air Norton.

If you didn't want to wait you could replace the pickup yourself. I'd imagine moving the original pickup wouldn't be a tough job

The problem is that it might be a tweaked version of the D-sonic, just like the current custom ones in John's guitars. I remember reading here on the board that John was testing a tweaked ver. of D-sonic.

I'm not a kind of a guy who would bother about that I don't have "exactly" the same axe as John but I wouldn't like to sacrifice middle spilt coil position. If John is using a tweaked version of that pup it means that it will sound good but would it sound as good with a stock D-sonic?

cheers

Mine has the original pickups, and I love them.

What is the deal with the D-Sonic?

Is the sound that much better, or is it just tweaked for the lower tunings JP has been using?
