I bought a MM petrucci last week and i really don't dig the sound of them dimarzios, i always disliked dimarzios but the guitar is SO COMFORTABLE. hard for me to go back to my warmoth, only reason i do go back is the sound, dimarzios D-sonic and Air zone are lacking compared to blackouts (passive are dark and it's like someone put a blanket on my speaker, the blackouts are ripping anyone who comes near with awesome brightness and definition)

only question is
how will the blackouts sound on the petrucci
it has a basswood body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard.

warmoth is mahogany flame maple top with maple neck and fingerboard.

will they have the same awesome effect they had on the warmoth as on the petrucci ?

i'd re-wire the pickups from one guitar to another, but i love the warmoth as it is and the wiring i done was superb (i hope ) and i don't wanna ruin it.

anyone ever tried the blackouts on a guitar like the petrucci ?

blackouts are EMG like active pickups made by seymour duncan.

it might be worth it to try tweaking your amp for the JP instead of just going ahead and tearing the pickups out first

what are you playing through and exactly what sort of tone are you going for (compare to some well known artists so we know exactly what you're talking about and can try to help steer you in the right direction)

That's a good sentiment Rob. An3lus, you have to bear in mind that the JP6's pickups were designed because they worked best with the guitar. The D-Sonic is edgy, but not too aggressive, and the neck pickup is smooth, and not muddy. I'd tweak your amp settings before gutting your new beauty.

the blackouts(as mentioned) are active pups.....it would require more than just swapping them out to get a proper installation. Great advice above.....start adjusting and tweaking until you get the tone(s) your looking for. Everyone's ear is a bit different and tone, like beauty, generally is in the eye of the beholder. The last DT concert I was at JP was getting some pretty wicked agressive sounds out of his rig, and I'm sure you'll be able to find what your looking for once you fiddle around a bit..... What's your current set up?

i use a seymour duncan convertible 100w tube amp
it has intgerchange-able preamp modules so you can get a variety of sounds, truly a great amp.
i'm not new to installing pickups (Certainly did more than 50 installations) but with the piezo it might get a wee bit complicated, but nothing to worry about. also i will probably lose the middle position in parallel but that's ok also.
i'm looking to get a heavier sound and a clearer definition of notes (which is something the blackouts give).
I got used to those pickups so much, hehehe, it's the only sound i'm looking for.
the sound is kinda like [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNtUpnPth_0"]YouTube - ESP LTD Ninja 600 and JH-200 Guitars[/ame]
(the first guitar)
but, with the blackouts sound is even brighter and better, and most important of all
no god damn hum
i'm actually afraid though to touch the petrucci (lol) it kinda scares me, it feels like blowing up a church or something.

You can try giving Kirk Hammet a call, he has some EMGs in his JP :D

huwahuh? are you being sarcastic or did I miss something?

FWIW, The DiMarzio X2N is very bright and sounds like a freight train hitting the front of the amp. Blows the snot out of EMG's, I'm not familiar with blackouts tho.

If I were you, I'd stay with the passives, try EQing your amp like everyone is saying. Remember..every guitar will sound different with your amp. No two guitars sound alike. Personally, I love the pickups in the JP. They sound phenomenal on any amp I've played.

yeah, i tried tweaking my amp, guess it's time to connect my EQ pedal :)
i'll give that a go, since the blackouts give out alot of wood tone, basswood being darker than flame maple it would only be worse for me. thanks guys
