Question for EBMM and Sub 1 owners

I recently purchased a black Sub 1 guitar. I primarily play classic rock and country covers plus worship music. I noticed that the Sub 1 isn't as bright as my Godin or Les Paul. I later found out that EBMM used 250K pots instead of 500K pots on a humbucking guitar. Have any of you replaced the 250K pots with 500K? Did you get more high end? Thanks Frank

I have never replaced one, but I would be surprised if it made that big of a difference.

If you want a brighter sound (more high frequencies) then replace the 250K pots with 500K pots. You will get alot more treble for sure. If you want even more "top end" then try some 1M pots.

Which Godin? Some are Mahogany (exit 22, for example) or part silver maple (detour, redline and a bunch of others). Might also make a difference from the poplar sub1.

I have changed the pots in one of my subs to 500k. The difference is subtle, but there.... Gives a little more high end, but not much more then that.

Wow thanks guys. To answer all the questions I have a 1998 Godin SD. Really cool and versitile guitar. I am not looking at changing the pickups out of the Sub 1, but I just want a little more twang. Warg Master did you replace both volume and tone or just the volume? Thanks Frank

I think I'd change only the tone pot. You could also experiment with the tone bypass capacitor too and change it to say .035uf or even .020uf and see if you like it. You might try this prior to changing to a 500K tone pot, and see how it sounds. Could also put in a treble bypass cap across the input to output of the tone pot which lets all the highs pass through.

I don't know how much "twangy-ness" can be had from a humbucker in hummer configuration, but as the sub 1 dimarzios are 4 conductor the ability to mod is there. Could install a tone pot with an integral push-pull switch and set the guitar up to run just a single coil of the bridge or the neck humbuckers, which might get you some tele style twangy-ness.

Actually, I changed the tone pot as well. I put a 1k in the tone position. The range did widen quite a bit. I used the same resistor that came with the guitar, so not really much change in the high end. The pot just allows more change with less rotation I've found. I like it... even more sounds to the guitar!
