I am looking at buying an Axis Sport (used), that has three single coil strat style setup.Does anyone know what pickups were used, and whether this guitar would work well in a country/southern rock gig?

The single coils used in the discontinued Axis Sport SSS are custom wound Dimarzios, and mounted in the Swamp Ash body of the Sport they sound fantastic! A Guitar Shop review from January '98 said:
The Axis Sport is essentially Ernie Ball/Music Man's take on the Fender school, adding tributes from Strats and Teles, but doing it with the company's famed attention to detail... {snip} ...the real standout attractions on the body are the DiMarzio single-coils that were wound for this guitar. They are so well-voiced for this ash-bodied guitar, it's scary. running through a variety of amps, the Axis Sport sounded superb, especially for clean work. Ash tends to have a fat bottom-end and somewhat bell-like tones, and this Axis didn't disappoint in that regard.
They finish the review with a resounding endorsement of the instrument, which I'll second. In fact, if you know where one is, and you decide not to buy it, tell me, and I'll pick it up - I've been looking for a good one for a while now. ;)

My Sport is an S/S/H version and came with Dimarzio's. I dont play country or southern rock, but would guess the guitar would be very well suited for this. I am sure one of the experts on this forum will be able to give you the proper advice. I have both the Sport and a Super Sport and have hardly looked at my Les Paul since I got them.

Good luck

Hi,

I have the SSS Axis Sport & I love it. As the review said definately the best of both worlds. How good is it?? So good that I sold my strat 3 weeks after buying the Axis - I knew I'd probably never want to touch it again. Once you've played EBMM you'll never look back.
