Hi all,
as mentioned previously.. I'm quite a noob when it comes to guitar maintenance.... so bare with me.. :)

Anywhoo.. I assumed my jp6 (bought new in Nov) was setup with 9-42's (alas I have no idea)... so, i went out and bought some 'super' slinky 9-42's..

I started restringing.. one at a time.. and i soon noticed that there wasn't anywhere near the same tension at the.. err.. saddle?.. and the floating tremolo was being pulled back by the sPrings.. (I hope that makes sense)

I'm assuming it's either that I was in fact running 10's.. or the 'super slinkys' are the culprit. Is that a reasonable assumption?

in the meantime, I put the old strings back on :)

oh a side note: My action is way higher than the faq.. i reckon it's closer to 3mm rather than 1.58mm at the 12th. I followed the faq... lowered it a shade, and it feels great. intonation is pretty much spot on too, which is nice.

Most JP6s are shipped with 10-46 or Regular Slinkies.

There was a point though recently where Petrucci did change to 9-42 or Super Slinkies but chances are your gtr had 10's.

Even with changing 10's for 10's the bridge might still need a little tweaking as floating bridges dont have a perfect "memory" for staying level. This is why I leave the trem plate on my JP6 off...so I can get to the trem screws faster.

hey guys im abit bothered now myself.i posted a thread yesterday called "is it the strings" cause i had some rattling problem on the g string on my BFR JP6.the guys on the forum suggested i change the strings to see if that sorts out my problem.i went to my local music shop today to buy some RPS 9-42 strings but none of them had them so i bought the super slinkys in the same gauge like the guy who posted this thread.i know my BFR has 9,s on it but im worried that it will have a bad effect on the guitar if i put on these slinkys until i get the RPS,s?
someone talk some sense into me so i can get this problem sorted.

Just about anything that can happen to your guitar from putting 9s when they're supposed to be 10s or vice versa(which lemme tell ya, isn't much), is completely fixable and with ease I might add.

So, quit worrying folks!

All is good. :)

Relax :) RPS 9s as well as Regular Super Slinkys (the pink one) have the same gauge wire which means it will put the same tension on the guitar. The only difference between the RPS and the regulars if I'm not mistaken are the reinforcement by the ball of the string :)

chriseb,

It seems likely that your JP had 10's (Regular Slinkys) on it. If you want to string it up with 9's (Super Slinky) then you'll probably need to adjust the tremolo claw in the trem cavity (back of the guitar). There are lots of threads that explain how to do it. You basically tune the guitar to pitch, adjust the claw screw a little, re-tune and keep doing that until the bridge is level (parallel to the body) when the guitar is tuned to pitch.

It took me about 20 minutes when I switched my JP from 10's to 9's and I was a complete n00b to such adjustments. Just tweak that trem claw little by little or you'll probably spend more time in the end.

thanks for the info everyone.

I purchased some 10's.. whacked em on, and bob's my uncle :)

I think I'll stick with 10s for a while...
