I have really been dying to know this. Ive been looking it up for a really long time. Does anyone out there know what kind of bass Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers uses?

Early recordings were done with a Stingray. Later stuff, around the time of Blood Sugar Sex Magic were done with a Wal.

He used an Alembic Orion (IIRC) on One Hot Minute, except for on Aeroplane on which he used a Stingray.

On the last few two albums he's been using a Modulus Flea.

Perhaps it's a Fender, but I would personally guess it was a Modulus vintage jazz as he seemed to have mentioned wanting one.

Maybe he has a modulus jazz now too, but Ive seen him live and he uses a fender jazz. If you saw the video for californication or cant stop u can see he uses a fender jazz too.

For the Can't Stop video at least, the instruments were chosen by the director because he wanted them to be a specific colour.

However, in an interview in Guitarist magazine last year, John Frusciante's tech says that Flea has a Jaco Pastorius relic fretless jazz.

Yep, for live usage: Flea takes four Modulus basses (Flea model of course) on the road. He relies mainly on his punk-rock bass (the one that's covered with the many stickers). He uses this bass the entire show, except for songs that require different tunings. All of his basses have BadAssII bridges and have Aguilar OBP-1 preamps and are equipped with Lane Poor PU's. (current Modulus Flea Basses have Basslines PU's). Want to know which strings are on it too ? :D

currently, flea uses his signature modulus flea bass, usually blue sparkle with gk amps and ghs strings. he is a big fan of fender jazz basses and music mans, having both a black and rosewood stringray and a black and rosewood stingray 5. he has also used wal basses and spector basses in the past, like before mothers milk.
