Im looking into getting a DSL 50 head off of eBay and am wondering can i use the Celestion Vintage 30 speaker in my hot rod as a cabinet. So i would unplug the speaker cable coming out of the out on the amp and plugging that into the head. God i wish i could explain this better. In other words i want to use my fender hot rod as a cabinet. will this work. the Celestion Vintage 30 i have is 8ohm and can handle 60Watts so i think i will be safe. But if anyone can clarify it for me that would be awsome

That shouldnt be any problem at all.

I wouldnt advise driving the Marshall head really hard at the speaker (ie: Master Vol on max), you are more likely to blow it nearer to its highest rating.

The important thing with valve amps is to ensure the expected load is present (ie: a speaker attached) otherwise its bye bye output transformer.

Make sure you reconnect the speaker cable before turning the combo back on :)

i knew about the valve amp rule thats why i wanted to ask. Thanks though but i would just set the settings on the back of the head to 8 ohms mono and i would be good to go?

also is a 50watt Marshall enough for small to medium sized gigs (coffee shops local small clubs nothing too major

thanks again

50W will be sometimes even too much, you will be just fine with the 50W

It also depends on the player, l have a 100watt mesa, i run it at 50 watts, even for gigs, but my mate used it at a gig a couple of nights ago, and l needed to put it back on 100watts, as he is a very light player, and l'm an agressive player. But 50 watts should be plenty.

I have a 50W JCM800 and I play 900 seaters where the sound guy insists I turn down..it's plenty loud!
Also, if ou're going to use the HRD as a cab only, I'd remove the tubes and store them. The marshall will really vibrate that box and removing the tubes will extend their life.
