I went down to Exeter, NH this past weekend to visit a former bandmate and play an open mic session at a local drinking hole. After we were finished up our set, I saw a middle aged gentlemen moving his electric guitar behind a bunch of other gear, but this particular guitar caught my eye. I asked him if that guitar was one of the Valley Arts Lukather models from back in the day... his eyes about popped out of his skull and he replied with a drawn out 'whooooaaaa... how did you know that?' I told him I'm a guitar junkie and am a Luke fan. He picked up the guitar and flipped it over. 'Not only is this a Lukather model guitar, this was actually made for him.' The neck plate read 'Made for Steve Lukather by Mike McGuire'. After I picked up my jaw, he was kind enough to hand the guitar over to me to noodle around on. Very nice piece, and a pretty familiar neck profile. I told him that I owned a Luke III HSS, to which he replied something like 'Oh yea, I have one of those too...I don't like it.' I reluctantly handed his prized guitar back to him and walked away without saying another word.
