re-stringing

hi i would like some advice on my jp regarding re-stringing, i read in a recent blog ,that you put the string through the tuning peg,lock it and then tune it up,how can that be right ? surely it should be locked after tuning?

I swear I'm not trying to sound condescending, but they are locking tuners. After you put the string through the hole and lock it, tuning up is the only thing you have to do. You are done.

Simply turn the tuning key to line up the hole so the string goes through it in a straight shot, pull the string through and remove as much slack as you can, tighten the locking knob on the back of the tuner, snip off excess string, and tune to pitch.

I think you're getting confused by what part of the tuner is being locked.

When you lock a set of Schaller, Sperzel, etc. locking tuners, you're not locking the tuner from moving. Instead, you are locking the string into the tuner.

You can still tune up like normal.

when i first got locking tuners way back i thought the same thing as this guy..

nevertheless, locking tuners are one of the best things for a guitar ever...i hate traditional tuners now with the winding and the fuss....

I absolutely love these tuners too. A big reason I love MM guitars... If I played any other brands, I'd be installing these...

To be fair though, I remember a brief minute of confusion when I got my first JP as to how string the tuners properly.

I had the same misconception when I first came across locking tuners. I quickly learned how they work during a visit to my local music store, when the string I "unlocked" to tune up suddenly popped lose

I did the very same thing, popped off my low E string. But now I see how locking tuners just make too much sense- I wouldn't want anything else.
