I'm considering re-wiring my Axis Sport (1997) as positions 2 & 4 seem odd, in that by wiring inner or outer coils of both P/U in series, there is not a great deal of difference in tone.

Seems more logical to me for 2 & 4 to be tapped single coils, either neck/bridge or both, so you can get more (of a strat type) variation in tone.

Guess it's going to be more noisy as they will be single coils but that may be a price worth paying.

Just wondered if anyone has done this and found it's a good mod (or not) before I get the soldering iron out.

:).

I've done it. Split humbuckers don't really sound like great single coils (and you get the associated hum), so the results are ok. I preferred the inner coils in parallel sound. But that's just me- some people like the split.

Another option is to wire either of the humbuckers in parallel- gets you closer to the split coil sound without the hum. Again, a tradeoff- it's not exactly like a single coil.

Thanks Beej, didn't think of that.

Not sure which would be better so might try both ;-)
