Hey guys - a friend of mine is starting out on electric and was asking for advice on what to buy- of course I recommended a SUB but even that is out of his range.

He wants to spend around $200.00 on a guitar. And ideas?

Hmmm ... tough in that range. Friend of mine picked up a new Ibeenhad for under $300 CDN, was just the thing he needed to get started as a starter guitar.

When buying amps I have always ended up spending twice as much money as I had intended. I have never been dissapointed with my amp purchases. I would recommend the same thing here. That should put them close to the SUB range. Otherwise, OLP baby. Give them a taste of what they could be addicted to. That's my nickels worth Koogs.

OLP is the only thing I can think of in that price range that is bang for the buck.

I guess OLP is a good choice, but ... I don't like the idea of having a trem + non-locking tuners on a low-end guitar. I would choose something with fixed bridge for starters. Take a look at Ibanez GAX range. They are quite playable - I had one as my first guitar.

Look for something used. If it's in decent shape he can get something worth twice the money of something used.

$200... definetly go used. Not sure who your local used dealer is, but in New England we have Daddy's Junkie Music. I've purchased many a used guitar from them. Killer prices too. I bought an excellent Hamer USA at my local Daddy's for $250. Ended up making a killing off the guitar. In fact, it's sale helped finance my first Silo. There are great deals to be had on the used market. Keep your eyes opened
