I've had my Reflex Game Changer for a couple of months and it's time for an update. Let me start with saying that I don’t think I’ve ever been happier with a bass. I have been tweaking the programming via the webapp and man, it’s fun and so easy. I keep finding something that I really like, setting them in the banks, then gigging to see which kill and which are just ok (none have sucked so far). It has such a clear voice and punch live, but I’m sure most of you Reflex guys already knew that. One thing I really like being able to see the battery strength in the GC webapp before a gig. I did a 3 hour gig last night and it used 3% of the 2 AA batteries, which are the original Duracell AAs that came from the factory. I know a lot if you guys are pumped about the new tuners and they are great. It’s not going to make me sell all my standard-tuner basses, but they are a nice addition. Although that’s not what makes the GC a bass-beast…

Now to the tones. I thought I’d do a little recording of 4 of my favorite active settings this morning. I recorded 16 measures of each pickup config in the link below. There are 8 measures of a little riff followed by another of a standard blues riff of each pickup wiring.

Reflex Tone Test - active sounds by OldManMusic on SoundCloud - Create, record and share your sounds for free

The first 16 measures (0:00 to 0:40) are using the bridge humbucker coils 1 and 2, coil 1 feeding coil 2 in-phase – a stock standard sound and tone most of us are familiar with. The second 16 measures (0:40 to 1:19) are coil 1 out-of-phase feeding coil 2 in–phase to the output with coil 3 in-phase feeding coil 4 in-phase to the output. The third 16 measures (1:19 to 1:59) has coil 2 feeding coil 3 in-phase. This is one of my current favorites. The fourth 16 measures (1:59 to end) are coil 1 in-phase feeding coil 3 out-of-phase. This is great for really cutting through a mix for a solo.

I recorded all of this straight into my PC via an M-Audio interface using Reaper with a little drum loop in the background. I just changed my active bank switch while bopping through the progression. All the Reflex’s active tone knobs were at their center detent. Please excuse all the clams in there, this was just to give you guys a quick example of the GC's power and versatility.

Cool stuff indeed!
Love the 2nd sound especially, really cool in relation to the first and third who sound great as well.
One day I hope to be able to welcome a Reflex GC to Sweden. :)
Thanks for posting!

Thanks for posting! Sounds were great, what was most interesting to me was the visual representation in the comparison of the combinations! Seeing the wave form variations for the same riffs with the changes in configurations was great.........

Guess I can chime in here:

Before I got the GC, I thought I was going to be all about the "crazy" tones (as in something like active coil 1 in series with 2 out of phase all parallel with 3 in phase and 4, etc) but what's happened is that I love the simplest tones. For instance the tone that's sort of become my #1 per say is passive mode just coil 2. So clean and it seems to cut through perfectly for almost any song.

That being said I've had fun with a few active tones that use all 4 coils that just seem to have all the punch in the world. I love how coils in series sound (most settings on my Ray HH are in parallel). 2s3 in both active and passive is pretty sweet. 1s2 in active provides a very classic Music-Man sound. I've had fun with using different tones for different parts of songs, I want to eventually get a MIDI foot switcher so I can more easily switch on the fly. Anyways, the bass is great. Great sounds, great feel. Not a single complaint.

I agree that some of my most used sounds are the simple configurations. I just dig having access and control of the coils. I tend to only use two, maybe three configs live. But in the man-cave, I'm constantly tweaking the settings. I'm a little surprised there aren't more forumites grabbing these. They are fantastic basses with unbelievable amounts of tone control.

You're right adouglas, the color didn't thrill me at first. I already had 2 black basses in the arsenal. But the black Reflex is clean and classy, especially with the white cream binding. Even if they had offered it in a 5er, I'm a 4 string guy so I would have ended up with the same rig. I totally agree with Bongo and Big Al love and I'll add the Stingray in there too, but this bass is finding a way into my hands more often.

Thanks for posting this. Really nice sounds and that coil 1 and 3 combo has an especially interesting sound - as you say, perhaps a good soloing sound.

I would love to have one of these - seemingly endless sound possibilities.
