Can somebody tell me how the parallel modes sound?

I'm on the hunt for a new guitar but other than a bridge hum and a tremolo, I'm not really sure exactly what I want. These caught my eye as I know EBMM makes a fine guitar, I dig the shape, looks, trem etc and from a few vids I've seen, dig the tones. How do the parallel tones sound clean? Can you get say a pseudo-Stratty funk tone out of one?

Also, any word on the neck and fret size on these?

Hey,

Pos 2 and 4 with the tone rolled down a bit can definitely quack. Not sure if I'd call it Stratty, but it gets that nice chimey single coil-like quality. And I stress single coil-LIKE. It's wonderful in its own right.

I love my 25th, its my go to axe for 90% of all my needs.

In general, I use pos 3 in serial for some cleans, but I use pos 2-5 in parallel for all my other cleans. vintage dirt also sounds great in parallel pos 1. It's a very very versatile guitar.

Between my Silo SSS and my 25th (reflex, same guitar) there's really no ground I can't cover. ANd that includes high gain.

Remember, a lot of the great classic funk and soul tones were recorded with a twin humbucker Gibson or similar. The reflex will do those tones perfectly and then some.

Did ya check the web for video demos?

Hey Deano, ya feel like doing another video this week? :)

Thanks for the quick reply dude. So you could fake a funk-style rhythm tone with those in-between positions?

Oh absolutely. Parallel, Position 2 or 4, roll the tone knob down a bit and funk away. pump the mids on your amp for that honky in your face tone, or scoop 'em and get a bluesy funk going.

It's very versatile. What you have to realize is that the parallel positions won't sound exactly like single coils, so you're not going to replace your strat. What you will get in those configurations is very sweet sounding humbuckers with a lot of high end. And the 2/4 positions are definitely funky. In series, you get tons of warmth and midrange growl.

Beyond that, the guitar is just so alive. It feels considerably different than something with the same pickups. Really a joy to play.

Dean of course we won't more videos!

OP The reflex may be the most versitile guitar in the EBMM line. The game changer will top it when it is released but the GC is basically a reflex on steriods.

haha I can do a clean tone video and a more shred faster high gain if you'd like ?

Dean, all I can say is "Thank GOD" you're going to do a clean video. I almost embarrassed myself and made one about a 1/2 hour ago. I was using a patch on my Fender Cybertwin that I call '"Warm Rain". It's clean with a decent amount of delay. I plugged my 25th in and played some 9th chord funky strums on positions 2 and 4 in parallel. Wow ! I played a strat & a tele for nearly 20 years and I'm completely satisfied with the parallel/series switch.

Yo Random

I have a pair of EBMM similar to Scoobysteve. Reflex and Silo Spec. HSS but I put different pickups in the Silo to Max the Strat.
The Reflex is quickly becoming my goto guitar because it does just about anything I ask of it and then some. Like the others said, not quite Strat but close enough for most situations. My Silo is becoming my only when a Strat will do guitar.

I backed soul legend Frankie Lee for years with a rosewood Axis SS. Walk on stage, plug into a cranked Twin, funk away. Position 4 was my favorite. More of a middle position-Tele vibe than Strat. But then I could switch to the neck pup for solos, back to 4 for the funk. :)
