Did MM ever release "relic" basses?

I got an offer to buy a used 5-string "reliced" Stingray. Said made in US and serial was E015... (IIRC, sorry, just got a quick glance). Black body, black pickguard, single PU, rosewood, plain headplate. Relic consisted of patches of black sanded down to the creame sealer. Overall smooth job that looked kinda professional. Back of neck (but not back of headplate) was thinner, darkened finish.

I would like to know whether this is a MM thing or did somebody just bang this thing up on his own? Or maybe a MM neck on a third party body (seemed unlikely, fit was like it should)?

Ugly as seven sins and so heavy it felt like dragging a ship from one dry dock to the next (well it's a Stingray 5, so...). But played and sounded great, and good price.

I have no big heartache with the whole relic thing, but late at night, I pray to the Flying Spaghetti Monster that EBMM never does it. And what the monkeee said - no such thing as a factory relic.

Thanks, guys.

Maybe I just lowball the heck out of the thing. It wouldn't be too expensive to have somebody put a new coat in a color of choice.

I know the bass you're talking about. The previous owner tried to relic it himself. He did a pretty crappy job. It's a late 90's Stingray 5. For the price G.C. is asking it's a great deal if you can get by the bad relic job that was done to it. I almost bought it but after I weighed and it and saw that is was over 10 1/2 pounds I had to pass. But it played well and sounded great. For $849.99 I felt someone was going to get a good deal.

I bought a teal colored SR5 with a few scratches and nicks, nothing close to a relic job for $675. $849.99 seems high!
and it came with a MM case

Well I can always try to lowball GC.

It's not that anyone in there even remotely cares about their used gear. Who knows what a "it isn't reliced, it's damaged" might bring up? David, any idea how long they've been sitting on it?
