I just got a used Axis. Mint condition. Looks great, plays great....I am excited about it, but.....damn this thing stinks of smoke.

Any ideas of how I can get the smell out? It seems to have really set into the unfinished neck.

Thanks,
Pete

Leave it for a few days to see if the smell reduces, then I'd go at it with some murphys oil soap and then lemon oil... it'll smell a lot better and be cleaner too!!!

Hey Boogie,

Sounds like someone's been playing in some smoky bars!

I'd definitely say that leaving it for about a week is best then do the Murphy's oil soap thing. Smoke smell is really difficult to get out of fabric, so I could imagine it would take a lot longer to get the smell out of wood.

One of the places I moved into here in the desert must've had 100 people smoking a pack a day in it with the windows closed before me, it took me about a month to completely get the smell out by airing it out and using plug-ins.

Leaving it out of the case is the number one thing, as said above. You can also use a polish on the body. On the neck, steel wool it then hit it with another coat of the oil and wax. Should help.

You could start smoking.

I'm sorry I was no help there let me try again.

Air, Baking soda, vacuum and then Fabreeze the inside of the case. There is a judgment call about putting the guitar in the case with the baking soda but it might help. For the guitar itself. Some parts like the bridge, the knobs and maybe the machine heads might be able to be cleaned with a dishwashing soap like Joy. That breaks down the tar from cigarette smoke in a hurry. Just after you rinse then dry them off as quick as you can. Finishing that, remember that the "WD" in WD-40 stands for Water Displacement. After the WD-40 evaporates, Remington Teflon Spray (The gun section at wal mart) puts a great protective layer and shine on metal.

The dishwashing soap will work great on the outside of the case. Then Armor All.

Nope,
I grabbed the burnt apple one that was up there the same time that all Rosewood one was up by the same guy. I actually dealt with him through the Gear Page though. Very nice guy to deal with and I got a killer deal. Not my first color choice and I almost passed it up cuz I wanted a translucent finish. But in the end I am very happy I bought this one and I like the color much more in person....definitely growing on me. I sold a guitar to buy an Axis thinking I would have to kick in 100 to 200 to get what I wanted and broke even instead.

I had it out all night at practice and it didnt' seem to smell quite as bad at the end of the night. So I will just try airing it out for a while. It is really just the neck. The case is fine.
Thanks for the feedback!

Pete
