Repainting my Musicman Luke - help!

Hi! I have recently (about a month ago) bought a Musicman Luke and have put an EMG 81 in the bridge position, because I want to use it for heavy/thrash metal.

I didn't upload yet any (promised) photos, because (I'm very sorry to upset you, but) I really don't like this Luke Blue color!!! I hate it!

So I'm considering to give my guitar to a professional to remove this color and repaint it. My question is:

Are there any possibilities that this process will alter the guitar's sound? And, if yes, for worse? Remember that I'm playing heavy/thrash metal.

I never heard of paint altering the sound. That would be a new one on me. I think you will be just fine.

The best suggestion is sell this one and get another one in a color you like better! Why would you do that to a guitar someone might love the way it is originaly? What if you want to sell it down the line...totally loses the value and people will probably stay away from it. Plus you wont get much for it.

Black or vintage (creamy) white

If you get the paint to thick it will harm the sound.
A thin coat of paint always sounds the best to me.
I would try to sand off most of the original paint down to the primer before you get it repainted.
Try not to take it all the way down to the wood just get the color coats off.

It will not affect the tone of the guitar. But unless you got a great deal on it you are going through a hell of a lot of trouble, and more than likely cost to paint it in a basic color you could originally have gotten-Black

I wanted to add since you are having a pro repaint it why not customize it up a little bit metal=Skulls or lightning or whatever comes into your head. At least you will have something really different and your own.

If it were me I would sell the Luke Blue and get a Luke in a color that I like. I love the Luke Blue color, but if that isn't your thing see if you can find one that is and sell the one you have.

I agree. I had a thin coat guitar re-finished and the finish was thicker and it sounded different. The EBMM's have nice thin coats from the factory. Luke Blue is a great color.

i would only refinish if there was a problem with the finish itself. The guitar will sound different if you refinish. may sound better or could sound worse. It's a gamble and unless if you really needed it, I would avoid it.

call me stupid, but both are easy to order, and the ebmm white ages nice and fast. in a couple of years it'll be close to what you want.

I'd just sell it and get a new one. Don't harm the original factory finish.

You should have no hard time finding a black Luke, that's for sure.

I've read a lot of articles suggesting that nitro paint or thin paint allows the wood to breathe and gives you "more tone".
I've had 2 guitars repainted, an Epiphone Sheraton in Leopardskin and a Warmoth VW in BlueBurst with a blonde super-heroine. Couldn't honestly say I noticed any tonal differences on either one, but then it wasn't possible to A/B them.
I've thought a lot about having my ASS repainted as I don't like flame maple tops.....but have so far resisted the temptation.
You probably would devalue your guitar by repainting it and would do better financially by selling it & finding one in the right colour.....but in the end it's your guitar and if you want it that way....go for it
