I'm thinking about swopping out the neck pickup in my axis for a smoother sound. I want more of a single coil sound when the coils taps are on (since I've had coil tap switchs installed for both pu's.) The bridge pu kicks ass but the neck pu is muddier and doesn't sound very single 'coilish' when the tap is on. Has anyone had succes in attaining the glassy neck single coil sound after changing neck pu's? Which brand and model did you use? I've always been a Seymour Duncan guy but willing to be enlightened by another brand. I know that varying pickup resistance values between the humbucker and the single coil (when the tap is on) affect how the single coil sounds. But that's about the extent of what I know on the topic. I hope this is making sense.

Although I haven't used them myself i have heard VERY good things about the Dimarzio Virtual Pafs. Some of the guys with newer silos should be able to comment more on those as the VPafs come as standard in the silo.

On a personal note i have found the Dimarzio Air Classic to be a great neck position pickup with a real good split sound. I just got a feeling the virtual Paf will be even better based on experiences with other models in the virtual vintage range.

Good luck.

So do you want something that's more single coil like when split? Or something that's more single coil-like all the time?

For the latter, the Bill Lawrence 450 is a humbucker voiced like a single coil- you can get the glassy sound with lots of highs, but it's still "humbuckeresque".

Otherwise, I like the BL L-500-R. Great neck pickup for rock and splits really really well.
