If it needs to be replaced and its not a compensated nut. Then bone is the best choice but there shouldnt be a big difference between plastic or bone so if the old one is fine the i suggest you leave the plastic one in place.

thanks for the suggestions ..... i'll go for bone ..... mine is a pre compensated nut era bass ..... and its got a hairline crack under the third string ..... which i dont think would last another season of touring ..... and india has high humidity factor which is bad for the glue that binds the nut ....

one more thing i have noticed after i started playing stingray .... the first and the fourth strings are too close to the side of the fretboard for my comfort ..... i would love them to be closer together more akin to the american standard jazz bass ...... so the new nut will have shorter string to string distance ...... am excited about the modification
