Hi there!

I am thinking about replacing the pickups in my Axis Super Sport - the the upper mids / highs are too harsh for my taste.

I consider putting in Bare Knuckle Steve Stevens Pickups - do you have got any experience with those in an Axis? Do you have got any recommendations for good Hard Rock Humbuckers (not too high gain) that can deliver a decent clean sound as well when coil tapped?

Many thanks in advance
Sven

Hi Sven

I put a BareKnuckle Crawler in the bridge position of my Luke- It's an awsome all round rock pickup IMO, plenty of power, fat, but not honky in the mid, like say a JB can be.

I think the Steve Stevens is similar spec, so I say go for it. When you order it try to speak to the boss, Tim- make sure the coils are wound so as to work with the 5way switching (Your guitar does have 5 way switching right?!).

Am I also right in thinking that you will need to grind down the legs on the pickup for them to sit in the Dimarzio style pickup routes?

Let us know how you get on.

Wow! To each their own. But I think the Axis/EVH pickups are awesome.

Hope you find what you're looking for.

+1 The sound of those pickups with that guitar is what made me want an Axis in the first place.

Good luck with your search though.

I bet even Steve Stevens wouldn't use them in his Axis :D

That's what I love about the Axis, it sounds great with so many different pickups. I'm always changing out pickups in my guitars.

My favorites: Super Distortion, Norton, Wolfgang, and Tone Zone.

Was there a large difference between the Tone Zone and the stock pickups? I am 80% satisfied with the stock pickups but just want to get rid of that edgy upper mids - is there a chance that this pickup will do the trick?

Although they are supposed to be close, I don't find any similarities between the TZ and the stock Axis DiMarzios.

But the TZ's do have less high end.

It seems I'm always changing pickups in and out of my guitars (and quite often back and forth in the same guitar) lol, lol, lol

Generally speaking, the Tone Zone is supossed to be somewhat of the equivalent to the Axis pickup (per DiMarzio).

Well, IMO, they aren't all that close. I think the TZ is louder and more powerful but, it doesn't have a lot of personality or color. The Axis pickup is more colorful (note wise).

My choice for an extra after market pickup; I LOVE the DiMarzio "Norton" bridge pickup in my Axis. Warm, colorful, punchy, harmonics, etc. . . excellent!

Hi! :)
I am thinking to put some hi gain pickups into my Axis, such as active EMG 81/85 combination...Has anyone tried these with axis, or could someone give me advice for any other high output pickup for metal tone? Thanks! :)
