I am thinking that I would like to replace the dot inlays on my Cutlass with abalone or something similar. Has anyone here endeavoured to do this before? Aside from steady hands and a little patience, I am looking for some advice or suggestions from around this please. Thanks!

I have replaced the inlays on a Warmoth neck with abalone, and while straight forward, it may not go as easily as the videos you can find on the topic on YT. I found removing the existing ones to be a bit more challenging than expected. Make sure to drill fully through the dot to get the Acetone underneath to loosen it. Once out, use an appropriately sizes forstner bit (by hand) to clean the hole.

Once new inlays are in, use a scaper that is the full width of the finger board. I found I ended up with some small "waves" on a couple spots. I just haven't gotten back to fixing those as it was then that I discovered SbMM/EBMM guitars and sold everything else except that neck and a tele body...which are due to go shortly.
