It really depends on what sound you are going for.
I'm going to slap an 81 into my Luke this week.
The stock 85 is a little too dark and not enough bite for my taste.
I'm not a fan of EMG for the most part, though they are great pickups.
To sum it up, the 81 is more setup for Metal sounds, and the 85 is smoother and darker sounding.
If you want the Metal tone, go for the 81. If you want a more passive rock and roll sound, stay with the 85.

EMG 89 is cool in the bridge position. Yeah EMG say it's a splitable 85, but it's really it's own thing, more bite. Maybe not as hot as an 81, but better lows.

I like EMGs... the 81 is my fav personally, just has the all around sound I'm looking for... :D
