Hi Guys,
Does anyone here have an issue with the location of the Pickup Selector switch on their JP's? I know this was built according to the specs of JP himself, but it does get in the way of my playing style and I keep bumping my Pinky and ring finger very often.

Has anyone ever re-positioned it? Any suggestions apart from absurd ones like stop playin it or chop my fingers off.

Would like to hear if you have similar concerns and what you did to fix it.
Thx.

Trade it in for a model that suits your playing style better

A good luthier will be able to rout and drill the body to place the switch somewhere more useful to you. Depending on the finish colour a really good luthier might be able to fill and finish the existing hole to make the existing hole almost invisible or at least visually acceptable. Good work does not come cheap though.

DrKev, thats what I have in mind, I just opened the pickup base plate and to be honest, its quite busy out there!

Am planning on these two options depending on how the wires can be routed, read somewhere on the forums that these can also be challenging.

Maybe try to rotate the switch so to toggle is not in the line of your arm movement:

Thx Mordimer, will surely try it out and let u know if it would make some difference. However, the problem is not accidentally switching pups though, it just gets in the way when I'm playing the first 3 strings.. and hard to transform the form I am accustomed too..
Cheers,

I had a similar challenge with the toggle switch, then I learned to pick with more control and stopped hitting the switch. Now I don't notice the switch at all and when I need to use it, it is right where I need it. Short story: focus more on picking and less on hitting the switch.

you can get rid of the tone control and move volume and switch backwards (and fill the left hole, need of a kill switch for example?)

I like the idea of having a luthier relocate the switch for you. I had a video game button kill switch added to an Axis and I think it was was around $100. The body was routed and he made a cover for the hole, along with some wiring.

Good luck!

The JP6 is my main guitar and I'm OK with the main pickup selector switch position. I had a problem when I had a piezo model with the selector switch for that. I kept knocking that when playing live and effectively turning the mag pickups off. Not very helpful!

I solved it by going with non-piezo models. Realised that I wasn't using the piezo enough to really need it so just got rid.

I realise that this doesn't really answer your question, but I just felt like sharing. :)

Ended Up Returning

Hi Tazz,

I feel your pain. Had a JP15 that I absolutely loved, but just couldn't get along with the pickup switch. Took it to a couple of luthiers and was told that it would be quite an undertaking to move the switch since the circuitry is pretty sophisticated. After about 3 months, I cried as I returned it.

Best of Luck,
Vic

I imagine that on a top of as sophisticated as what the JP15 has, it would be incredibly difficult to cover up the hole where the switch once was and do so in a way that looked like it was never there in the first place.

Probably the simplest mod is to just change the angle of the switch, so that if you do hit it you won't change it's position. Have the switch repositioned so the axis of it's movement isn't in line with the arch that the controls make, but rather go up an down perpendicular to the body. (I believe I saw an imagine of this somewhere on the interwebz...but I don't remember).

Second easiest mod is to just remove the Tone control and either 1) move the toggle and volume knob down one slot each OR 2) just put the toggle in the Tone knob area. But you'll still be left with a hole to cover up, and it'll be hard to match that hole due to the finish on the guitar.

Musicman Responses

When I was looking at options for the switch I contacted MM twice. Their suggestion was to try a smaller switch, but they didn't have any other than what is currently on the JP.

I then asked about cutting down the switch and inquired was it was a solid switch. This was their response: "We don't have experience cutting the switches down in factory. We inquired with our engineers and they said they are 80% sure it's solid, but wanted to let you know that it is fragile and cutting it could damage the internals. Replacement pickup selector switches are available for purchase if needed. Thank you. "

I didn't want to chance it, so I very, very reluctantly returned the guitar.

Hope you find a solution.

This was a while ago did you have any luck. I’ve seen one option but I love my neck on my JP I scored the best neck I’ve had in 35 yrs. Getting rid of it is not an option. I getting ready to open it up and locate it as far back and low as I can get it. I know that Jo’s style but it’s a dumbass place to put it inmho . Thanks let me know what happened? Peace ✌️

Thts not an option mate, am looking for solutions that include playing this guitar. Thx.
I know this is an old post. But I’m going to have to relocate mine as well. I just can’t get rid of this guitar. The neck is fkn amazing. I’ve had guitars charvels etc. since 1986-87. And this fkn neck is the best I’ve ever had. I can’t get rid of it that outa the question so I’m going to modify.

Old post I know. But I must agree even though I want to move the switch. It’s really tightened up my playing. Another year with it . I might not move mine. But I definitely agree.
