So as many of you may or may not know I've been producing my oldest friend's blues record for the last few months. Well after many, many hours of recording, editing, and mixing the CD is almost completed. The only thing left are a few blues guitar solos and I've got a session with a cool sax guy left to do.

We're hoping that we can get an early June release date happening. Well here comes the funny thing. My buddy (who wrote, and played almost the entire album himself) has decided to put a band together and do shows all summer and into the fall.

Since I have so much at stake in the release (in return for the use of my studio and time I'm getting half the profit) he asked me to play lead guitar in the band. He's going to be the lead vocalist and rhythm guitar player. He's already hired the rest of the band and we started rehearsing last week.

Well here's the part I'm going to hear about. I'm a metal guy. I don't stray much from my natural habitat. I don't own a strat, a tele, or a Les Paul.

So....... I'm going out this year representing all our Ernie Ball brothren by performing an entire album's worth of blues tracks on my EB/MM Petrucci seven string.

Take that, you blues purists! :fawk:

I'm going out with my Pet, my Mesa MK IV (which actually does blues like a mother ****er). I'm sure I'll hear about it from a few people already.

Last week we did our first rehearsal and I got to meet our bass player. He's in his mid to late 30's and a classic rock and country kind of guy. The first thing he said when he saw my guitar was, "hey, you've got too many strings on that thing!"

There are a few awarding winning blues guys around here and they're all strat through a cranked Fender amp kind of guys. I'm just waiting for them to see my tatoo'd & pierced ALL Metal ass on stage rockin' their turf.

I think this is going to be so fun. I've only had the chance to do covers live for such a long time that doing some originals (even if they aren't mine) will be a true kick in the arse!

I'll keep you posted.

Cool man and good luck with it! Who the hell said a 7 string Pet can't do the blues?!?!? Too bad for them! If the "blues purists" don't like it, tough. Chew harder. What can I say? Throw down and have a good time.

I can see it now, a blues solo done over the top with tapping, shredding and all that jazz...BOOYAH! Make sure you rip some lo B action in there just to rub it right bro! Seriously though, I've been playing a lot of blues lately with my sevens, so I can feel your pain

You need to print up a t-shirt for the first gig that says
"This is not your dad's blues guitar" and have an arrow pointing towards your Petrucci

Well, some old fellas sitting on a porch playing dobros might think those Strat players aren't keepin' the faith. ;)

Bring it on. I can play blues just fine on my JP6, 'cause the secret is in the soul (and the fingers), not the fretboard. :D

Have fun with it, and show off that beautiful MM guitar!

I agree with Raz, get some low B in there, some shredding, do an apeggio sweep or something every now and then, just to rub it in. hehe.

Scott.

Go for it

It's not what ya play but how you play it.

But remember, just before you go on to take a deep breath and say to yourself

Ah Boom...Boom....Boom...Boom....Boom
Ah Haw.....Haw.....Haw....Haw.... ;)

hehehe... I took my lime green Universe 7 and a Crate Blue Voodoo to a "Blues Tues" open stage out here about six or seven years ago... It went well, but I did get some looks... I only did two songs, but it was fun - and I even got down to use the open B a couple runs... ;)

I was told a long time ago that all you need to play the blues is 3 chords and the truth

Update!

So here's the latest update. Everything is tracked and ready except the few guitars solos and fills we left for last. My buddy is working on the artwork & details and getting the merchandise ready and ordered.

We have our first supporting gig booked on July 8th. We're doing a concert called Friday Night Alive. Every summer a neighboring town has this series of concerts where they close down a street downtown for about four or five blocks and the put a stage and it's a big deal to them. We sent them a press kit (with some very rough clips from the disc) and they're going to have us kick off the series. The pay isn't great but we should be able to make up for it in merchandise & album sales. It's only a 2 hour show, we're going ti do like 8-10 cuts from the CD and throw some covers in to fill time.

We're going to shoot for a June 1st release and should start gigging out shortly thereafter.

I've been talking with my video geek friends and I'm hoping to get some footage at each of our shows so we can make a DVD at the end.

COME & GET IT! CD RELEASE!

Jeff Carman and the Cadillac Daddy's is officially on sale! After ten long months of trial, error, beer, and more error, it's ready to go.

http://www.timepiecemwd.com/jc.htm

The website contains clips, a place to order and something other standard band type stuff. We just got the T Shirts yesterday and they're really nice. We had them printed on Hanes Beefy T's so rest assured the quality is tight. The CD's will be here tomorrow (thanks to overnight service for panic relief)!

I meet Jeff in junior high and we've been jamming since. This album is a mixture of his influences and tastes and the talents of some very cool local cats we've known and loved for quite some time. I'd say it's bluesy and rock 'n rolly but I've heard early reviews as "Modern Blues" and "Classic Rock". I'll let you guys decide, go check out the clips.

The whole CD was done in my home studio, although over the course of the recording that was at two different homes. You'll find a lot of amps and tones used on the record including a Line 6 Vetta, a Peavey Triple XXX, my Mesa Mk IV, and I'm sure there's a couple I'm forgetting.

The album was recorded using a Fostex VF 16 which was later imported via ADAT lightpipe to my Carillon Pro Tools rig where it was mixed and mastered.

Jeff (being the jack of all trades he is) played all the drums, did most of the lead vocals, played most of the rhythm guitars, 9 out of the 12 songs he's playing bass, and even tried his hand at some lead guitar.

I played a few bits here and there on rhythm guitar (mostly when it was easier for the producer in me to show him instead of tell him what I thought was needed) and I did some solos and leadwork.

There are two guest vocalists which are really cool ladies to work with who can belt it out. I highly suggest checking out the track "Can't Get Close To You" for some old school belting.

Our old buddy Graddy Darrow play all the harmonica (blues harp if will) the whole time while battling Cancer. In fact, it was his benefit CD that got this whole ball rolling.

Bass on three tracks was contributed by Jamie Werner my friend and co prog conspirator. Look to see him playing on my upcoming prog stuff.

A cool local guitar player named Scott Arnson did a few solos too. Jeff's known him for years and we've both been in his cover band before.

So, I'll quit babbling and let you check it out! :)
