okay I'm not promoting my band but more I'm trying to get to know the new SR sound I have.. heres the thing we recorded a few tunes the other nite on a nice digital set-up and as far as I was told it wasn't really mixed up just balanced. now my bass sounds real pingy and I was told that Musicmans have a tough sound to bring out in the mix like a Rick?

my stuff is run pretty flat with the bass up a little on the amp, the eq on the bass is High- a little past ctr, Mid is in the ctr and bass is a little past ctr also.. the amp is a GK400RB and the filters are not boosted and the EQ is flat with a bass tweaked up a hair..

the cabs are Ampeg classics (I only play the 4x10 live)

I like my bass sound flat sounding and clean without sounding boomy and with the EB stainless med slinkys I think I found a good sound but people say its tough to drag it outta the mix so that brings me here cause I'm wondering if I should just boost the mids???

you can hear the MP3's on our new website and once you hear them you will hear what I am talking about. I'm not trying to push the band just get some advice on my equipment from fellow bass players using MM's . I did plan on buying a EDEN Head soon but now I am wondering if I should replace the cabs too?

I'd record it the way you normally play. A competent engineer should be able to apply EQ to make your sound 'pop' out in the mix.

And that means applying EQ to other tracks aside from your bass. A good engineer will shape each track's EQ around the frequency range of the instrument recorded on that track.

thats what I figured but people around me are telling me that musicians who play SR's usually record with something else (Flea recorded with alembics I do know) because the Musicman is best heard live..

anyway thanks for the post..

I would agree they sound great live, but listen to Bernard Edwards of Chic, Timmy C from Rage Against The Machine, Louis Johnson of Brothers Johnson, John Deacon from Queen, etc...........its such a unique tone that it always grabs my ear when I hear it, live or recorded. Love it!! Love it!! Love it!! :D

i totally i know what youre talking about dude ... i think the others are right when they say its an issue for the engineer to deal with.

last time i recorded i used my sterling mic'ed and before mixing etc i thoguht it sounded really, really bad but the engineer did his magic and it came out pretty good. id talk to the engineer bro

on a + note you guys sound good :)

hey, as a bassist who's done a decent bit of engineering and production, a few things stood out when I listened to your mp3s

--you've got a good band - good singing, playing songs. without that bass sounds arent worth much!

--The sound had low end, but it was at bit undefined, and your attack was 'clicky' - you could hear it, but it almost felt separate from the bass notes.

-- EQ can help - I agree w/ others here that a good engineer should be able to help. It will help an engineer if you bring in recordings of bass sounds that you dig. Just from hearing this, boosting 'high mids' to get ring and cutting high treble to lose the click will help...

-- Heavier strings can give you a lot more "ring" when picked -- that's worth a try too.

Good luck! Good recorded bass sound is an endless challenge. But a MM is a good bass to work with. --Bert

What? The guy in RATM uses a Music Man? :eek: Some of their bass lines are sooo good! Not too keen on some of the lyrics mind... you need to kinda shut your ears during "Killing In The Name Of" - or at least turn the CD down very quietly... :D

Ooooh - didnt know that. Makes me want a MM even more now! :(

Yeah, his tone on the 1st RATM record is killer...very up-front!! But....his tone on the newer albums with a Fender Jazz and numerous effects is killer too with that distortion!!

I hear ya about the lyrics....not quite something to play when the grandparents are visiting, eh?! :D
