Greetings, I'm new to the forum, long time reader first time poster.

How does the Sub 1 compare to the other models in the EBMM line? As far as how the neck feels, how the pups sound, overall quality. With the amazing craftsmanship all over the EBMM line and the desire for budget guitars these days, I'm surprised that I don't see these things everywhere.

I own a Silhouette and my first EBMM was a S.U.B. To answer your questions:

How does the neck feel?
The neck profile feels the same as the Silhouette. The S.U.B. neck is painted, but in a way that it's not sticky. The Silhouette neck feel's a little smoother because of the wax/oil finish on it.

How do the pickups sound?
Not bad. They sound pretty aggressive, but civil at the same time IMO. Some people on this forum swear by them.

Overal quility?
Quality on all EBMM instruments is just perfect. I've owned the S.U.B., a Stingray and of course my Silhouette. All 3 instruments are quality wise on the same level. I was actually surprised when I first got my S.U.B. I've thought that a "budget line" instrument would be OK in quality, but not perfect, like these instruments are.

Hope it helps. If you have anymore questions just ask! :)

The SUB is a great guitar. I bought mine last year and I was really impressed (so impressed that I used it the same week for a concert ...). Sadly, the SUB are not produced anymore.
The SUBOC (SUB Owner Club) can give you some details & pcitures :

The SUB is really a Music Man in term of quality and sound (I own also a Morse since 2001).
If you can find one, buy it !

I have a 2H SUB1, and I think the pickups sound outstanding. I use mine now for Drop C# tuning, it nails those Sabbath tones. But, I have used it for blues and 'classic rock' in the past. (So, I guess I am saying that it is versatile). The neck feels great and like ReB87 indicated, it's not unlike a Silhouette Special. It really is a great guitar.

What is a SUB1 guitar?

Sub1 guitars are really great guitars, and now are going to be collectible. They basically are a no-frills Silhouette Special. Neck is hard rock maple with a rosewood board. The woods are very high quality. The frets look like standard vintage style nickel silver fretwire. I don't know the exact profile. They are very nicely dressed from the factory. The neck has the same profile as a Silo Spec. The paint is really nice, but instead of glossy and smooth it is textured and semi-gloss so to speak. They came in White, Black, Red, Blue, and Graphite. The bridge has the same shape as the music man hardtail bridge and is the same size, however, the string spacing is narrower than a standard EBMM bridge. Think standard $trat versus American made $trat. Same difference here. Sub1 is near 2.125 and standard is more like 2.250. Still the bridge is excellent quality. The trem bridges are also excellent quality. Saddles are vintage stamped steel. The pickups are said to be like Paf's; they have a vintage level output and are excellent all around for most genre's of music. They very much resemble DiMarzios in construction but were made by another company for EBMM. The tuners on the hardtails are plain well made tuners that do the job and stay in tune; trem models have the locking type. The locking tuners are actuated with a screwdriver type slot and the taller posts sticking up above the headstock contribute to more mass in that area. The poplar body is a little on the heavy side, but not real heavy like a L_es Pa_ul. I want to say in the 7 to 7.5 pound area. The neck is adjusted with the body end adjustment wheel just like all the other EBMM guitars. There is a volume and tone control and one three way switch, that selects bridge-both-neck. The body is routed for two humbuckers and will accept Silhouette Special pickguards. The SUB1 body would have to have the center single coil cavity routed out to accept the Silo Spec loaded guards. You can see this in my pics album at the link below.

Hope this about covers it for you.

Fantastic guitars! The neck is a very comfortable C shape so it will be great for all kinds of music. Mine is such a player I really love it.

It should be pointed out that the body of the guitar is actual more similar to the Morse than the Silhouette Special. The wood is poplar rather than alder, and there is no forearm contour. Both are similar to the Morse guitar.

Thanks for the info everybody. I was considering getting one to use as a cheap backup guitar, but it seems to be sort of in line with my Y2D as far as tones go. I kind of want something with a different flavor, so luke or silo spec it is!

Sound-wise, I suspect the SUB1 is more like a Silhouette Special than a Y2D, so if different is what you want, then the Luke is the way to go.
