I'm reading Ozzy Osbourne's book right now, and as always, I started researching him and the band online. Back in 1979 when Ozzy went solo, I knew of the hits on the radio, but didn't buy any records - I was too much into Toto, Rush, Yes, etc. When I went to youtube, I found some great footage of Randy Rhoads and Rudy Sarzo - and didn't realize that Rudy was playing a very nice MM Sabre - black - maple board! Dang, that's a nice bass!

I like how after the solo he acts he is banging the neck but hes not actually doing it :D
Randy knows how to treat a nice bass. ;)

That explains why I liked Rudy Sarzo's sound and that on the early Ozzy solo songs so much!! Bottom with nice growl and attack click... perfect metal sound!

Funny, I've never seen Rudy play, but developed the same "playing technique" for show effects; hit the upper horn of the body which makes the strings ring or even slap against the fretboard... you can use that to keep a note ringing for quite some time.

Back to the topic: Makes me want to have a Sabre...

Sarzo was Ozzy's live bassist.

On the early Ozzy records up through No More Tears, it was mostly Bob Daisley playing an old P Bass.

Rudy also played a fretless Sabre live with Ozzy around that time... haven't been able to dig up a pic, though...

The individual felt pads of the mute assembly used to fall off pre-EB Rays and Sabres. Presumably a glue failure issue.

Looks like he's lost the one from under the G string - exactly the same happened to my 79 Ray about 3 months after I bought it new - I just noticed it had disappeared one day presumably on some dark stage.

I got to see Ozzy on the Diary tour, shortly after Randy died. Brad Gillis was on guitar, for what would become the Speak of the Devil live album. I still remember Rudy's stage antics.

IIRC, Bob Daisley was unceremoniously fired and never credited on the album liners, Rudy's info was inserted instead.

What a great rhythm section Ozzy had in those videos. Randy was such a fluid player.
