I just got a Sabre HT in a trade yesterday love the guitar, but the volume pot is scratchy when being turned. Also, if bumped when using the selector switch it cuts the signal out entirely. I opened it up all the solder connections are good, swapped the battery, and used some deoxit. Any other issues I should check for? Also, the shaft for the pot seams really loose and rocks back and forth. The tone pot feels normal and doesn't rock back and forth. Checked the hex nuts. I'm throughly stumped. Debating on buying a new pot, but not sure I have the skill to desolder the old one and install a new one.

Hi there.
Did you buy the guitar used or brand new?
If it's new, remember WARRANTY.
Otherwise, it shouldn't be too hard to change the pot.

I had the same problem, had to get a new pcb (with push/push pot) and I desoldered and soldered in the new. Wasn't too bad.

I wouldn't be concerned about it being loose, probably just due to it being push/push.

I tried cleaner and compressed air, neither helped. Really difficult to get the nozzle where it can do any good.

I’m confused did you replace just the pot? I ordered a 500k push/push from the parts store on the Music Man site. Is there somewhere you can buy the whole assembly?

I suspect the pot, especially if the shaft is loose and rocks back and forth.

Reach out to Customer Service (below) and discuss it with them. If needed, they will have a spare part and a circuit schematic. A guitar tech in your area would be able to solder in the new part for you.

Thanks for the tip. I’ve wired up guitars before but never a pcb. I’ll try giving them a call tomorrow.

It’s used I traded for it. Also the pot is solder on to a pcb. Otherwise I would’ve already swapped it.
Sorry, I was drunk without drinking. :)
I didn't though about the PCB...and, definitely, that's not a walk under the sun.
A friend 'o mine had to change the board on his Majesty and it has been a hell of a job.
If you're not confident with that, I would search for someone with high soldering skills.
And, of course, I've noticed you traded the guitar just now... :)

Good luck!

You can probably find what you need and a competent tech in your local error for a pretty reasonable price. There isn’t anything unusual about the pot itself that should make it difficult to source or even require a specific call out to Customer Service.

Check out Maxwell's House of Music or the Louisville Guitar Center. Both are local dealers in your area.

Dumb question, but if it's just the pot, why not just de-solder the wires on the bad pot, leaving the PCB connections intact, then connect the wires to the new pot?

I'm pretty good with a soldering iron, but terrible at reading wiring diagrams and following directions in general... :)
