if your looking for a deal, used is a great way to go, but your gonna have to shop around and it might take some time. There are deals to be had, but way more used than new. Now if you can find NOS (New/Old Stock), something that's been hanging around for a long period of time, like 2-3 year, you might score a deal that way as well.
As far as new goes, unless your working with something new that open box or something like that from Musicians Friend or a floor model at Guitar Center, you'll be hard pressed for find a huge deal.
You should be able to find a used jp6 for the price of a new sterling by musicman. I know i did! No offence to sbmm, they deliver top notch gear but i prefer to buy used gear to get the best resale value, and that way i can buy real ebmm guitars.
Generally not cool to discuss specifics of retail prices on the forum. I can't tell which country you are in, but, if in the US, Guitar Center runs special promotions/coupons a handful of times per year where you can buy a new instrument for 20% off. This is fairly predictable in the weeks around Black Friday in November but there are a few other occasions throughout the year. Check their website often!
Check Musician's friend. Check there open box stuff. I just scored a Silhouette Special Black with white pearloid pick guard. It was listed in Mint level 1 condition. This means that it had been opened but it's a new guitar. All manufacture warranties and return policies apply. My case the guitar had been sitting around since 2012. Granted the guitar is 4 years old but it is in new condition. Although when I received it it would not stay in tune. There were some other things that were not right like a warped pick guard. I sent it back to Music Man and Musician's friend paid shipping. Bottom line I picked this guitar up $1,115 after they gave me an additional $100 off the asking price. It does not hurt to call them. They will work with you on prices. When I bought my JP12 I called them up and they gave it to me for 15% off. I paid just a little over 2k for it. When you are buying a high end guitar you have some room to negotiate with the bigger box stores. They will usually work with you.
I know the sam ash by my place in orlando has a red one. i think they're asking 1099. its in really nice condition, case and everything. Not sure if thats a Killer deal or not, but def a nice guitar for the money.
