This is probably considered sacreligious here, but has anyone ever sanded down the neck on their guitar?

I was doing the sand/oil/wax on my Axis and started thinking about sanding. I love my Axis' neck, but it would be even better if it were slightly flatter. For my hands and technique anyway.

Opinions?

Yes, many necks are getting better after this operation. I do it always. Point is, that is good to pay attention to edges of frets. If you make sure, that they´re corners are finished well, playin´comes very delightful. Even wide neck feels much thinner.

Talk to Tommy in Delaware- he's a pro at changing neck profiles. I'm sure he could give you some good advice!

using only sandpaper is ALOT of work . depending on how much i want to take off........ i use a wood file....then a furniture scrapper.....then sandpaper (220,320,400,600,& 800).....then naptha......then oil...then wax. i've done quite a few neck profile mods.......my advice is practice on cheapo guitars until you get a real good feel for what your doing........it's really difficult to put all that sawdust back on your neck ........
:D

maybe you should check out the jp it has a thinner neck and if you like that better sell your axis and get that. i would be afraid to sand down my neck.

Hmm... yeah the Petrucci would seem logical, but I can't live without a floyd and I love the maple fretboard and pickups on the axis.

Actually, if you had the Petrucci you would not miss the Floyd. I thought I'd hate a guitar without a Floyd... but the JP trem rules. 100x easier to string, and no tools required! Locking tuners work great. I can whammy all I want without going out of tune.

No consolation on the maple fingeroard or the pickups, though.

So, I went to my local shop to see if they had a petrucci, since most of my complaints about the axis are addressed by it, thinner neck, and the arm contour. They didn't have one, but one of the sales guys owned one personally, he brought it in this morning and I went over to check it out. Wow! I could probably learn to live without the maple or the floyd. The thing felt great.

Only catch is they want almost 3 grand for one....

Blackspy,

Ahhh, I knew you'd see the beauty of the Petrucci guitar. Now you just have to shop around for a better price. ;)

I didn't really get alot of time to play around with the JP, and I didn't get to plug it in. So here's a tough question, what do the pickups in it sound like as compared to the Axis? Also, you said you used a floyd and haven't seen any problems with the JP trem, so can I ask, do you do alot of stuff with it? I'm pretty hard on my floyd, with bombs, and the like, very VH-ish... can a JP do that and stay in tune?

You won't get the same depth or resonance out of a JP trem the a Floyd, nor on any other tremolo system ever. JPs are easier to string and plus they are floating so...your choice, I prefer Floyds, even though they are more of a labor of love

Blackspy,

I currently own a JP and some other guitars with Floyd's.

I can dive bomb on either without going out of tune. 95% of the time I use the trem for just a slight warble. The other 5% I have the strings flapping in the breeze and producing a sonic maelstrom. I think both trems perform similarly in that scenario.

The pickups on the JP are not as high-output as you might hope for, but they sound okay. I can wrest any sound that I need from them, but I do have to be careful when pinching harmonics, as the 'sweet spot' is a little harder to find.

I really haven't missed using the Floyd. Especially when re-stringing and tuning.

OC,

Yeah, we could skip the dudes with makeup, but I'd go for the trampy clothing for the females, and the big hair...
