Best band ever.

'Nuff said.

:)

Although, I feel like typing so I'm gonna elaborate a bit. :D

Well, back in 2003, when I was freshly 12 :p, I really got into Deep Purple and classic rock in general. Oddly enough, just a few months after, Deep Purple had a show on their Bananas Tour right here in Zagreb. It was a phenomenal concert, the best night of my life! Up until yesterday. ;) And it was particularly strange because that was the 3rd time Deep Purple has been to Croatia in 35 years. Now it's been the 4th time in 39 years. :D The average is getting higher... haha...

Well, anyway, The Rapture of The Deep tour (European leg) started a few days ago, and on November 4th, the show was in Split (Croatia). Since I'm from the capital (Zagreb), which is about 400 km (250 miles) away from Split (which is on the sea-side), we took the 7 a.m. train and began the adventure . :p When we got to Split, we killed some time in the afternoon, had lunch, went to a bar, etc. and finally got to the venue about 7 p.m. Some posters said the show was scheduled for beggining in 9 p.m. and other said it was supposed to start at 8.

Anyways, no matter what the opening time is, my very first goal of the evening was to get as close as possible to the stage, so I went right in pretty soon. I positioned myself infront of the keyboard and guitar rigs, in the 2nd row. So there I stood and patiently waited, and even put up with the annoyingly cliched power metal opening act (which sucked horribly beyond belief), just to save my spot.

Finally the opening act finished and the Deep Purple crew started preparing for the show. About half an hour later, THE SHOW began. They opened the show with 'Pictures of Home' (somekind of medley). Having said that, imagine a completely black unlit hall with thousands of people waiting and chanting, then all of a sudden... TUM TUM TUM-TUM TASH TUM!!!! :D Paice's unbelieveable drum intro! The vibe was fantastic! They continued the show with the usual classics, plus a few real surprises - including 'Bloodsucker' and 'Into The Fire'. I am 99% happy with the setlist, I just wish they played 'Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming' and a few more new songs. They only played 'Rapture Of The Deep' and 'Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye' from the new album. Understandably so, because they probably don't want to sacrifice other classics for new songs. But I really like the new album. :) Well, they "closed" the show with 'Smoke On The Water', then played the encore: 'Hush' and 'Black Night' with instrumental solos and jamming everywhere.

Well now... Steve Morse. Is there anything left to say?

As far as I'm concerned, the best guitar player ever to walk the face of the Earth. The man is pure genius in human form. The playing, the phrasing, THE TONE, the raw power, the emotion, amazing! Since I was so close to the stage, and right in front of him, I heard everything from the backline. His Engl's KILL! VERY VERY loud and agressive, cut through very well. The tone was fantastic! He switched a few guitars: the Y2D with cream pusm's, the Y2D with the Floyd, the Y2D in drop D and his old #1. The Y2D's sound a tad bit brighter to my ears, if I may notice. (?) I kinda prefer the tone he got with the #1, though. 'Contact Lost' and 'Well Dressed Guitar' sounded impeccable.

The audience was fantastic! No offence to anyone, but I don't think there are any audience's in the world quite as crazy as Croatian audiences. :D Ian said it himself! Twice! :D

Well, anyway, the best night of my life changed from December 6th, 2003 to November 4th, 2007. Outstanding performance.

I'll post pics as soon as I find some. It's still early, I just got back home this morning after traveling all night.

Hope you enjoyed this little story.

Thanks Spud!

I'm really "proud" (unbelieveably lucky and grateful) to be 16 and have the chance to say I've already seen Deep Purple 2 times.

And Ian Paice 3 times!

Now here's some phenomenal photography by Zoran Vincic.

The pics are on this link (let me know if you're having trouble opening it, just be patient 'cause there's a lot of pics)

Yeah nice photos indeed!

Do you know the photographer? - if so I'd love to know what Camera gear he's using?
Spud

I don't personally know him, but we're on the same Internet forums and stuff. I think he's using a Cannon EOS 40D. ;)

Spud, it's 1.17 AM right now. :D

Actually, I was wrong - it's a Canon EOS 30D. ;)

BTW On the pic it looks as if I'm actually a bit away from the fence, but really I was just behind the guy with the UN t-shirt.

Sorry for bringing this back up, but I'm just sooo amazed by Steve Morse's tone. How is it possible that someone's tone can be so warm, yet bright enough, so agressive and energetic, yet so gentle and pleasing at the same time?! Cuts through so well and sounds impeccable in combination with an organ and the rest of the band. Astonishing. One of the best tones ever or what?!

Yeah right, thought the same many times. Must be the fingers. It can´t be the guitar because I don´t have this sound. But maybe the guitar helps ;)
