Scored my first MM Sterling - question on clear coat repair

Hey all - I scored my first (and long drooled over) sterling! It's a Natural/RW with a birdseye neck made in '95. Overall it's in great shape, but it's got a few areas where the clear coat has been chipped. Any one have any recommendations on filling? I was thinking just some Krazy Glue or something.

Welcome to the forum Dan, make yourself at home and have fun here, Krazy Glue is sometimes used for broken nuts, but I don't think you should use it on your bass's finish! :eek:

A lot of folks around here consider blemishes, nicks, cigarette burns, bullet holes, dog bites and locust infestation as character marks. But if it really bothers you, call customer service and see what they think, EBMM service is the best on the planet, not just this one, but all of them! :D

If you are worried about the finish cracking around a dint in the finish, get some clear nail polish and put a light coat over the hole which can give it a little protection

That won't 'hide' them, only stop the edges from chipping further or whatever

My single H SR5 has 3 or 4 "character marks" and they always get treated with a light dab of clear nail polish. Keeps it from cracking furthermore.

Speaking of make up, where did you get those red pumas BP? I'm a huge Pumas fan and would love to purchase some. :D

Thanks for the feedback everybody. I've only owned oil-finished basses before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. From here on out, I'll consider them battle scars and display them with pride!

I've been waiting for years to get my hands on this bass. My main bass for the last 6 years has been a '94 warwick thumb n/t. I still love that bass, but its weight and balance issues have been getting more annoying. After strapping on my new-to-me sterling, I think my warwick may be relegated to jealous lover status. Balance, weight, monster tone - I couldn't be happier.

By the way - what kind of battery life should I expect?

About the finish: I agree, leave it as it is!
But should you want to fix it, and the chips aren't too big, you can use isocyanate acrylate glue. Get a thick version, and allow each "coat" to dry for a day or so. Then use a brown paper bag to sand the spot, and then polish. There is an excellent article on the procedure in the latest stewmac news letter. If you want me to send it to you, pm me.
