I bought this bass a couple of years ago and I love it. Dob is 11/10/88, 2eq, lovely Birdseye neck. I was wondering if the scratchplate is original or not it's a 1 ply not 3. What were they fitted with in the 80s? Or is that one of those "how long is a piece of string" questions?

Greetings from the UK

It could be original, best is to post your serial number in the serial tread and ask aj if there is annything in the records.

Thanks all.
I got the Dob from this site a while ago.
Really great bass, bought from a chap who had it in a loft for 10 years plus. Beautiful figuring on the neck as I believe most basses of that era had.
I have a 2006 sr4 HH which also great (amazing range of tones) but just doesn't quite have that thing if you know what I mean.

Good question!

I've made a few serial number enquiries with Customer Service for late 1980s instruments over the years and it would appear that there generally isn't a record for the pickguard colour, let alone whether it's 1-ply or 3-ply.

From my experience, most black pickguards from the era are 3-ply but I recently saw a natural Sabre from around 1986 which has a 1-ply black guard. The owner told me he's had the bass from new, never changed anything, and I have no reason to disbelieve him.

You'd probably have to ask someone who worked for EBMM at the time to get a definitive answer though.

Great looking Ray, by the way!

Late 80s stingrays have some mojo, some people claim are the best stingrays ever made, congratulation, nice bass.

I think I might have an aversion to 6 bolt necks and plastic battery covers!
