I'm thinking of selling or trading my 77 Stingray. It's a great bass but I just can't get over the 15 lbs that it weighs. It has been refinished and had new frets and a new nut installed. Any advice on how much I should ask for it?

Check the "Completed Listings" on Ebay of other pre-EB Stingrays; try to find an average (US sales only, unless you're willing to ship Int'l). Figure in shipping costs and/or tax; it all counts in the final sale.

The refinish may drop the price a little, but I wouldn't give it away based on that alone; it's still a Stingray!

The refin will definitely hurt. My guess is $1200-$1500. Are you sure it's 15lbs? Even my mahogany and ebony Les Paul (14lbs) doesn't weigh that much.

The body is August 19 1977. The neck is April 6 1982. Hope this doesn't make much of a difference. Obviously i'm not selling this as some kind of collectors item but as a great sounding and great playing bass.

I'm digging that refinish. What is that? Shoreline Gold?

Yeah it's shoreline gold which I was told was the original color.According to an interview with George Fullerton gold was available as a custom color. This probabaly explains the contoured body which led an EB employee to believe that this bass was probably made for an artist as the contoured body wasn't stock in 1977.

here's my two cents.

what you have is a 77 body, with a non original neck (albeit still a MM), with a modified body and a refinish.

i would say absolute tops a thousand to 1100, tops. seriously.

Yes, I agree. If it has the original pickup and preamp, $1000-1100. The prices have gone up over the last year or so from what I've noticed (no big surprise).

Wow, thanks for the input. That's more than I thought it was worth :D

If it were a straight 77, not refinished and it didn't weigh as much as a buick, you'd be looking at more than that - a lot more.

you know what's funny is that people will say my 2001 SR5 is really heavy and i'm like oh yeah? At that point I hand them the 77.............

>>>>Hey Rod, what do you think is a fair price for my Stingray?

That's probably around the right price. Prehaps a little less.

On the subject of weight, the 1980 price catalogue lists a 15 pounds shipping weight for a Ray (16 pounds for a Sabre) and an extra 20 pounds for the case. Mine came with a leather strap 3 1/2" wide across the shoulder. I remember having to get a special one made which was about 5" wide :(

But there seems to be a large weight variation with the Pre-EBs.

i had a 77 ray that weighed probably 14 lbs.....it was killer...but i still regret selling it...

I had this '77 Stingray awhile ago, it had a gold refin. The person that bought it refinished it in a turquoise blue.
