sensible bass lines

I was always really blown away by Graham Gouldman's
playing on the first five 10cc albums. They seem simple
enough, but under the surface, there is alot going on
for a pop setting. Kinda like Colin Moulding or perhaps
McCartney, only severely twisted.

The basslines that blow me away most of all are those that I've heard hundreds of times but never noticed... because they fit so well.

This says it all!!! It's the lines that move, yet you don't know they're there. Look at most of the classic U2 songs, the bass isn't flashy but it moves the song to a higher level. More importantly the lines make sense and blend evenly with every thing else that is taking place in the song. The beauty lies in the simplicity and rhythm.

Oh man, there are TONS of XTC songs that float my boat (as a bassist and otherwise).

Colin Moulding is a genius.

"I'm Merely a Man" and "Across This Antheap" come immediately to mind, too.

the bass player from the dave matthews band plays some pretty cool stuff. i can't think of any songs off the top of my head, but pretty much everything is good.
