I'd like to know whether if somebody makes some changes to his/her instrument does this mean that the altered instrument will lose some of its aftermarket/collector's value? For example lets say that a stingray has the serial E0blabla which means that it was built as a maple neck ash body in candy red with pearloid pickguard on March 11 1998. If somebody changed the neck with a rosewood, would this make the instrument of a lesser value?

IMPORTANT NOTE: All the changes to the instrument in this example should be ORIGINAL stingray parts.NOT changing the originals with eg Bartolini pickups, Kahler bridges etc.

Any permanent changes to a vintage instrument will degrade its collectability and value.

So I should keep the original neck? Can I have 2 necks then(original ernie ball)?

I just noticed you said it's a 1998 model bass. It will be a long, long time before you have to consider its "vintage" value.

Meanwhile, my opinion is that it's your bass and if you want to change something to make it better for you, then by all means do it. I mean, I certainly would.

Thanks mate. I agree that it is MY bass and I should do as I please. Who knows? One day it could end up as my "signature model"!!!;) ;) ;)
