Hi all-
New to the forums. I been a bass player since the age of 15. Something like 30 years ago. I'm not a musician anymore but have found Musicman this year and LOVE these basses. I used to play mostly Fenders back in my band days. Now it's a hobby.

Anyway, I bought a nice HH this year in Saphire Black. Loved the tone and neck. Not so much the color. I've sent it off to Marty Bell to be re-sprayed a serious Ferrari red. I've seen the trans reds, but I don't think I've seen an opaque solid RED Stingray. Do any of you have a picture of such a beast? Mine will be shipped back next week, so I'll post shots then.

Thank all!
Alec

COOL. Dig that Hot Rod red. Can't wait to see how mine turns out next week. I've got the same pickgard. The neck is Rosewood.

Thanks for the pics!

Are you going to put the prancing horsie on it or some other automotive embelishment? I always wanted a hot rod red bass, so will live vicariously through this thread.

Well, I hadn't thought about it, but that's BRILLIANT! Why stop there? How about a carbon fiber pickgard! Starting to really feel this theme bass thing. The knobs could be CF too. That might be trickier though. The pickgard is somewhat doable. Somewhere online someone makes stuff out of carbon fiber from an EPS file. I can make the vector file. Time for some research.

Great idea Andy. Automotive theme bass. Love it. The first MusicMan/Ferrari bass is born.

just $0.02… those kinds of things rarely age well. At some point there may be a "what the heck was I thinking?" moment.

If you do go there, consider what makes Ferraris classy. It's because the logos and nameplates aren't huge. The logo badge on a real ferrari is tiny.

Back in the day Pontiac put a giant puking chicken on the hood of the Trans Am. Nothing quite says "Gee, how…. Smokey and the Bandit…." as that.

About that time I saw the coolest Trans Am I've ever seen. It was black. The guy had removed all the decals, tinted the windows as dark as they'd go, and put a single bumper sticker on it. In red letters on a black background it said "Rugby players eat their dead."

The image of that car has remained vivid in my memory for over 30 years.

Less is more.

Just IMHO, though.

PS: A great way to express yourself that is 100 percent reversible is to do a clear pickguard and put a photo or color print underneath it. Jack has done some pretty nifty things with slightly naughty French postcards along those lines.

On my hot rod red above, I had a small white "Ducati" sicker ready in had to place between the bridge and pickguard but decided against it . . . still think it would look great, esp. if you're Ducatista.

I may have jumped the gun on the whole car theme. Couple of days of reflection are a good thing. I don't want to lose the Stingray character here. Maybe just a nice yellow prancing horse decal would do fine. Something like the attached. Simple, and reversible if I hate it down the road. Going to love the red though.

I've got two potential pickguards for this. Pure white and the pearl white like the one on the red bass in this thread. Either would work. I've also got a Tort I could rob from my white Stingray but I think that would be a mistake.

Kind of fun to play with this stuff.

Thanks

+1

Get a clear guard and you can put whatever graphic you want under it without it being permanent.

Just got this from Marty Bell. Looking very interesting... I'll post the final pics of this beauty when I get it back later this week. Looks like a sweet job.
