Still very new to the electric guitar scene. I know a seven string will add more range in playing and I see that John Petrucci plays a 7 string for a lot of their more technical songs i.e:

Caught in a Web
The Mirror
Lie
New Millennium
Just Let Me Breathe
ACOS
The Dance of Eternity
The Glass Prison
Blind Faith (I'm pretty sure)
This Dying Soul
In The Name of God

My question is does it add lower range or higher range or is it up to you?
I'm thinking that after I get my Mark V in February :D I'll start saving for a 7 string JPXI or hopefully by then they'll have a JP7 Game Changer. *fingers crossed*

Anywho I dont want to NOT be able to play all his songs so I NEED a 7.

Still gotta learn to play the 6 though! HAHA ;)

Cheers.

Possibly I googled it so who knows?

Thanks for the wealth of input on my question though! :/

Caught in a web and Dance of eternity I believe were 7s.
You can tune it any way you like man. If you want a low B or you can tune the lowest string to E and have a high F? F#?

Very cool! Is it a whole different world using a 7 string? I see you have both a 6 and 7! Lucky you.:)

List modified, those songs use a 7. Blind Faith was a Baritone 6 and Name of God was a 6 tuned to C standard. 7 in standard also used on Shattered Fortress and Dark Eternal Night.

Well, the 7-string standard is the addition of a low B, and the remaining 6 strings in standard tuning.
You can have a higher note than the high E, but that would be a custom ordered guitar, which Music Man don't make as far as I'm concerned.

Check this one out, it's actually an 8-string! has the low B and a high G, so tuning is BEADGbeg (low to high)
This one is of Chris Letchford from Scale The Summit, a Mike Sherman Custom Guitar.

I saved for months and then ordered a Ibby Universe many years ago. Waited for 9 (!) months for it to be delivered. Returned it after 4 weeks. While an AWESOME axe, I couldn't think of any reason why I would make it difficult for myself with the extra string. When I need the lows I downtune a 6-stringer and really don't miss the extra high E. Playing just got harder with that extra string and consequently the size of the neck.

Then again: I REALLY appreciate players that really make use of the extra range! I guess I'm just not intelligent enough to make the most of 'em :D. 6 strings are difficult enough to master for humble me ;). I'm not ruling out owning another 7 someday btw!
