Yeah, he was awesome. A master of the guitar and piano. For one of his albums he also programed the drums via keyboards live, using all his fingers for each drum/cymbal. I feel sad everytime I think of how he was taken away so early and had to suffer w/ so many problems. At least he left a legacy through his music.

I really like a lot of what Shawn does, but a lot of it is, pardon me for saying, just oni the verge of noise.

I mean, I ultimately respect him for what he did (especially with those 5 note groupings of pentatonics, really hard to do) but there's such a thing as too much of a good thing. ;)

Technique can get in the way of music if you aren't careful. :)

I see your point. If he just would have toned back the speed on some passages, or maybe cleaned up the distoryion it would have been coherent. Also, the brief passages where he said he was going to play basic rock licks was awesome. Sometimes simplicity is the key. I saw Michaelangelo Batio live and that was just a wall of noise. Shawn Lane still kick's a**.

Man I know this guy is dead and that't too bad but what a wanker. I listened to about 5 seconds of it and was tired of it already. Thats not even music. That kind of playing is stupid. I love shredders but that guy was wanking the whole time no sense of melody or composure or no buildup like Petrucci does. A solo should have a buildup and release. The whole thing was a lookie what I can do show off stunt. I would much rather listen to Stevie Ray Vaughn or someone like that.

It's all relative. The dude from Children of Bodom called Petrucci a wanker, and others consider him one as well, does that make him one? People would also say SRV sucked and played the same song over and over. It's horses for courses in this debate. I appreciate all sorts of musicians w/o limiting myself and saying so-and-so sucks. I believe you can honestly learn from all people. Mybe Lane's music was too complicated for your ears to understand.

If that's the case, I don't seee where you're coming from. I have Lane's albums in addition to the people you mentioned here and I think Lane is just, if not moreso, just as valid. I guess we can agree to disagree on this subject and leave it at that.

Well like I said I love to play fast or whatever myself but the first part of that video was all a pick as fast as you can and do as many sweeps as possible kind of jam sounded more like someone practicing at Guitar Center. I am sure he has some more interesting stuff just didn't listen to the rest of it after the first 5 seconds. Another cat I like alot is Scott Henderson. Dudes chops aren't all that but man his phrasing is awesome.

Hey Raz,
I think I spoke too soon about this Shawn Lane guy. I guess I need to give artists a little more listening time than 5 seconds. I went back and listened to some of his stuff where he wasn't just playing a million notes a minute and I have to say his phrasing is awesome. His playing and phrasing is reminicent of Scott Henderson and Allan Holdsworth wich are two of my most favorite players cept he has something they don't really have insane chops. So I recind my premature statement of him being a wanker.
