I noticed today that some of the frets on my silo have this film on them, its not rust or anything, but some of the frets are no longer shiny and when I bend the strings over them its not smooth, any idea how to get the frets shiny and slippery again?

Steel wool works fine, I've used it before but now prefer using a 3M synthetic pad - that way you don't get small shards of wire wool all over the place and forming a "beard" on your pickup.

Tape off the fretboard using non-residue painter's tape, and also tape over the pickups so they can't attract steel wool bits. Use 0000 steel wool lightly, and you'll be amazed how shiny those fret become.

The best way is to also use masking tape on your fretboard and if necessary cut the tape either side of the fret using a scalpel. Then use your wirewool/3M (angle grinders are a tad course!)after, apply some lemon oil to your 'board and it will look great.

i find 0000 steel wool works the best .
use a fingerboard guard to protect the fingerboard. that way use can rub hard from side to side on the fret without fear of dulling the fingerboard..........& there is much less fallout from the steel wool. i also use a magnet to pickup what little bit of steel wool that does fall off. i think the steel wool gives a silkier feel.......& it's cheaper. gotta get a fingerboard guard though. works alot easier than tapeing up the whole fingerboard.

finally got some wonderwipes too. they work......well.....wonders !!!!!

Can guitar players be trusted with a Dremel tool? Seriously, I used a buff wheel that was too small once, and... erm... well... nuff said.

I've found Flitz to work great for a mirror shine, after using a little 0000 wool. Only thing to be careful of is not to get the black tarnish on the maple. Shines like a diamond.

If this were the Fender forum you'd be asking how to get rid of the remaining shine & make them look filthier
