Hi,

Am wanting to ship an EB from Canada to Australia, has anyone had the need to do this, if so who shipped it, how much, any problems?

The seller has been quoted CAD$335 from Canada post and UPS at CAD$405. Either are a too expensive, especially when sending from US is approx US$160.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I shipped a guitar to Aus for less than $100... But thats from the US. And it shipped in two packages. It was an already disassembled project so the body and neck went seperately. I know it's not ideal, but perhaps a possibility. After that long of a trip I'd want to have a good setup anyway...

I haven't shipped overseas in a while, but last month I shipped a guitar from Kentucky to California by UPS ground and it cost just over $50 with insurance on $1,200. A year ago that would have cost me closer to $30 - huge increases in insurance and a big fuel surcharge. Shipping keeps going up, and your choices are getting more limited.

Shipping is just getting expensive as John said even in the US, UPS has increased quite a bit and USPS service is bad and they are quite expensive as well now, plus they have size limits to Australia now, you cant say well I had one shipped for X$ when it was a year or two ago prices have realy increased.

Yep, everone's rates have gone up. USPS is still the cheapest, at about half of what FedEx and UPS charge. Shipping from here to AUS is around $120. UPS/FedEx charge around $250-300. THe difference in price is mostly the customs brokerage. UPS and FedEx maintain custody of your package through customs, while USPS hands it off to that country's postal carrier.

I've yet to try DHL, but I imagine they cost as much as similar carriers.

I shipped a $trat to Perth from CO USA with USPS International Priority mail and it was around $90 if my memory serves me well. Since there was no case and the buyer didn't mind, I took the neck off and shipped it in one smaller box. The neck was in it's own box inside.

Dimensions and weight are what determine cost in shipping. Fortunately for us, the EBMM guitars are shorter and the cases are shorter. I just measured my silo case and it's 39x14x5. That means I could get it into a box thats
42x16x7 or very close. Since the length is shorter the cost should be less.

I calculated shipping to
Citigate Perth Hotel
707 Wellington Street
Perth, WA 6000, AU

Using 42x16x7 dimensions, and 21 pounds weight, I find I can only ship it using USPS Global Express Mail Guaranteed and the cost is $277 if I print it online or $308 taking it down to the Post Office. 1 to 3 days delivery.

The problem with USPS Express Mail Intl. or Priority Mail Intl is length-plus- girth of the parcel has to be under 79 inches. And Express Mail Intl. has a max length of 39 inches, so it would be close to use that method. An Ernie Ball G&G case is 77" length-plus-girth unpackaged. If I could wrap it in heavy paper I could send it USPS Priority Mail Intl for $121.89, 6 to 10 days. If I did that the buyer would have to understand that the case may get banged up throughout the journey. But the guitar should still be protected. Also if shipped like this it would be prudent to wrap the case in some nylon reinforced tape at 2 or 3 points on the case.

length-plus-girth = length+2x width+2x height

Now what about Fed Ex?

Same package 42x16x7 (guitar in G&G case in box) I get $355.92, in 3-5 days. It might be a little less in bare case.

You guys can check UPS. But it's possible the UPS shipment will fly on Fed Ex aircraft.

For Canada, check the Canada Post website.

I tried to ... to Rob actually! But it's just too damn expensive up here.

Ended up taking the guitar with me on one of my trips to the States and sending it USPS. Waaaaay cheaper, and faster.

Beej,

That may have been true in the past but USPS has gone to well you know the H word.

Took two weeks to get the ASS from Lenny and they caused stress cracks plus I just shipped - still shipping a guitar to Dave B. over the pond, while the price was not outrageous took 8 days just to go from Texas to New Jersey, he still does not have it taking way to long and the last one before i sent overseas USPS took three weeks to get there and it was to Germany, plus cost almost as much as UPS would have.

Old Motto you get what you pay for, I will not ship USPS any longer.

Had my JP via USPS - no problems - Fred packed it well and everything arrived as it should. USA to UK for under 100 bucks back in Januuary

But how long did it take for you to get it from the time Fred shipped it? Just curious, maybe its just my post office but again done with shipping guitars through them.

Fing,
Well there was a bank holiday that came into play, if memory serves me well I think it was 2 weeks and I knew that any sooner would be a bonus..

That's the second one that's been shipped via USPS and I've no complaints.
- it was the cheapest option too - by far ($94)

Is it a new guitar ?

Apparently the new EB cases change things a LOT.

The old size were eligible for USPS Global priority (~US$150-160), but now they're too long ?
Need to go the next level up, which gets here REAL quick with full tracking, but more than doubles the shipping cost.

Might be the same for Canada ?
