I have an SR5 and noticed today that the neck plate serial number and the serial number written in pencil on the neck itself are different. Are they supposed to match or do I have a frankenstein? I pulled the neck because I needed to add a shim.

Thanks,
Bill

The neck number isn't a serial number. Probably a batch number for the neck type, and/or the finisher's initials.

As long as your bass has the neck that the serial number says it should have (fretted maple fretboard, fretted rosewood fretboard, lined fretless, or unlined fretless), you are fine.

It should be noted that many guitars will have various numbers on some parts that are not the true serial number. Trombones have two pieces, but only one will usually have the serial number. The slide may have a different number, stamped on both parts of the slide, so that after finishing they can be re-united.
