I was cleaning and adding oil to my fretboard the other day and I took off all the strings. When I took the strings off, I heard a pop. Didn't think much of it since I figured it was the tension on the neck was gone. Cleaned the fretboard, made it nice and clean. I put the strings back on... then immediately I noticed something was really wrong... After adjusting the action setting everything back, I noticed when I play my open E, theres a metal rattling sound coming from the neck. There is no fret buzz anywhere, it only happens when I play the open string. The neck looks straight and the action is set up right... But the rattling sound won't go away. I called customer service and arranged for it to be sent back to SLO... Kinda depressed because this will be the second time I have to send it back to SLO since the I bought the guitar in Feb... But I wanted to see what you, the mighty forumites, think could be the problem. Was I not supposed to remove all the strings at once when I clearn my fretboard? Is this something serious like the trussrode snapped or came loose, or something minor... Thanks for any input...

Not sure if its the same thing but something similar happened to me with an A string once. Turned out when I took the strings off I somehow bent or screwed up something with the A. After further inspection i noticed my little imperfection wit the string so I just cut the string to take that part out, restrung it and it was fine. I think the string is still on my bass too.

If you were able to set your relief, the trussrod isn't the culprit. If it's only the open E, it's either the string or the nut, both of which are easily solved.

For me, the most common cause of a buzzing sound while playing is a tuner where the paddle has become loose from the shaft. If you play the note/string that is causing the buzzing/rattling, touch each tuner to see if the sound goes away. Of course, this is most common with older basses.
