So yah....I can't leave well enough alone so the Sublhoette is being transformed into what I'm going to call the Lukesublette. In the transformation, I'm using the silent circuit from a Silo Spec and my question is around the placement and the aluminum on the pickguard. I placed it where the circuit and physical diagrams put it from a silo spec, but using a silo spec pg, I noticed that I'm sticking it to a section with aluminum foil on the PG. Is this consistant with real life or do I need to remove some aluminum to get more noise sensed?

Yah, I know I could pull apart my Al, but I have enough work putting this thing together as it is.

And yes, I will get a thread put together. Gotta start taking pictures....and yes, it's another complete refinish of the body and a little bit of body work. :D

If your doing it as a ?Luke with EMG's there is no need for the Silent Circuit.

The aluminum shouldn't matter much. Position will, slightly (you'll be able to tune it to one p'up better than the others).

Make sure to adjust the gain via the set screw so you get the best hum cancellation.

One other neat thing you can do- if you coil split the bucker, you can wire it to the output of the Silent Circuit rather than ground. You'll get a split coil sound with all the hum reduction of the SC. Works well :)

Thanks.....especially since it's already stuck on the aluminum......Not doing EMG's.

How do you tune the gain? I can understand the set screw, but is there a good procedure? I do have access to pretty much any EE equipment. I assume this is done out of the guitar somehow....

I usually do it in playing position, in a noisy environment, with the amp's gain cranked.

With the strings off, I'll adjust the screw slightly and listen, repeating until I find the lowest noise. It's kind of a tradeoff- what works best for one p'up may not work best for another. But it's pretty easy to find the sweet spot.
