In their search to make table tennis more spectator-friendly, officials have done everything from speeding up to shifting to larger Ping-Pong balls the system.

But one element appears stuck within a 1970s rec area -- the players' uniforms. With few exceptions, table-tennis champions compete in baggy shirts tucked into waistbands. The shorts are loose that gamers sometimes hike them up producing the result of a diaper. - Best Ping Pong Paddles & How To Choose Them * pingpongsport/bestpingpong Wiki * GitHub

Now the International Table Tennis Federation is seeking to change this, inspired by the trendy and -- yes -- sexy uniforms worn by athletes in sports as badminton and beach volleyball.

"It is Only a matter of being well-dressed," said Claude Bergeret, a Frenchwoman Who's the executive vice president of the federation. " We state in French, 'ne pas etre habillee comme un sac a patates.' " Or, you do not want to be dressed like a sack of potatoes.

Several players concur.

"This is a very good idea, actually essential. Look at these tennis players -- miniskirts, tight shirt," said Lau Sui Fei, a player from Hong Kong, in an interview after defeating the French player Xian Yi Fang, 4-1, in the next round of women's singles Wednesday. " While I play for a club, my boss took me to dress pretty. Otherwise, how do you draw more spectators?"

Bergeret started a campaign to revamp the wardrobe, going so far as to present executives out of outfitters using a slide display comparing the outfits of female tennis players of the sport.

"They understood the problem," Bergeret explained.

Since that time, several of the significant clothiers -- Joola, Butterfly, Tibhar and Li Ning, she said -- have begun tinkering with the typical uniform, including miniskirts, fitted tops and other elements. Bergeret held a fashion show tennis World Cup, showcasing uniforms for both women and men.

Judging from the attire on display in early rounds of men's and women's singles matches Wednesday, women's table-tennis style has quite a ways to go when the players hope to catch up with the likes of Venus and Serena Williams, or the beach volleyball player Misty May-Treanor.

Viktoria Pavlovich of Belarus looked smart in a miniskirt with a matching along with hot-pink piping. Gao Jun of the United States was stuck using a navy zip-up shirt and a pair of baggy shorts.

"I would like to see the women wear a skirt," Gao said Wednesday after beating her miniskirted opponent, the Slovak Eva Odorova, 4-2, in the next form of women's singles. " I do wear a skirt when I practice. We just obtain this, you know," she said, motioning to her outfit, "so I will wear what it is we obtained." - Best Ping Pong Tables & How To Choose * pingpongsport/bestpingpong Wiki * GitHub

Bob Fox, the United States' team leader at table tennis, said he favored spicing up the uniforms if for no other reason than it could attract new fans. " I mean, consider shore," he said. " I don't think I need to say anything else."

Some Chinese fans said sexy dining table tennis is a contradiction in terms.

"Table tennis is popular enough in China, because everybody plays the game," said Li Yong, 47, a man spectator. " I come for those players with great abilities, not for prettiness."

Another man, Li Yi, 39, disagreed. " I really don't think they have to dress like stylish celebrities, but they need to do some thing about the present ugly outfit," he explained. " Too many blues and blacks."

The thought pleased a table tennis player who is a household name in China, Zhang Yining. Zhang hair gives her a appearance that is tomboy, but she recently posed on a Chinese Web site for a glamorous photo shoot. In a meeting after beating Pavlovich, 4-0, Wednesday, she stated she would appreciate clothes that maximized rate and spinning the ball. " I would really like to see tighter and shorter sleeves," she explained.

While sleeves might please a star like Zhang, in table tennis it is not unusual for players to compete until they are in their 40s and 50s. That creates difficulties when women of different ages must agree on a single uniform, stated managing director of Tibhar, Roland Berg, a German firm that outfits several Olympic teams, such as Portugal, France and Brazil.

"As soon as we make something which is modern, unfortunately, it will not sell very well," Berg said. Older women, he explained, prefer cotton uniforms in a classic cut, frequently from the color blue. " There are plenty of players that are 40 years old. They don't want to be wearing pants that are hot. I know that."

She stated she favors upgrading men's attire, while Bergeret has focused her campaign on girls. That is fine by the participant Christian Suss, who defeated Janos Jakab of Hungary, 4-1at the next round of the singles of men.

"Some say, this is what they wore 20 years ago already," said Suss, gesturing in his loose grey shorts, which did not fit his polo shirt, which was performed in Germany's national colours of red, yellow and black. " Today we are a game. You see that the tables and what else appearing different. But the garments? Yeah, we have to improve a little bit longer."

Not sure about the Silhouette but my Axis which I replaced pickups with BKP's had short legs. Long would have been too tall since they're direct mount and not adjustable. Another consideration, again, with the Axis at least, is that the cavity where the legs fit is rounded in shape so I had to specify that BKP make mine with a smaller, triangular tab instead of the usual rectangle. Some pics of the Silhouette appear to have the rounded cavity but I can't tell on those with pick guards covering it up.

I think I've got short legs... but I used the long screws without shortening them on my Silo. So long legs should work, too.
