I've just brought a second hand silhouette great condition but I think it may be an early model and I'm not sure what pickups they have. I have an axis super sport and the pickups are much better, does anyone know if the early models have different pickups to the new models and if so any recomendations what to change them to ?

I bought a Dargie II off of another member here, and I was so excited until I plugged it in..the pickups seamed so weak and tinny compared to what I was used to. I swapped them out for a Dimarzio AT-1 (timmons)in the bridge and Air Norton in the neck. wow what a difference, more what I was looking for, now I'm 100% happy....well for now anyways...

So yours is a 1998 kieran. I think it'll have DiMarzio PAF Pros. The PAF Pros are set up with double rows of six allen heads as pole pieces. Sound like yours? We'll know for sure once you get a chance to put some pics up for us.

There has been a lot of discussion about replacing Silo PUs due to "lack of bite". As far as I know, the PAF Pros have been replaced by a DiMarzio Custom HBs for Silo earlier in the last decade, most propably to give the Silo a less "progressive" and more an "all around workhorse" profile.

The challenge is, to not spoil the sonic integrity of the Silo concept when adding a new bridge PU. For example, some of our brothers here tried Crunch labs and D-Sonics in the bridge of a Silo, but for most of them it just didn't work out with rest of the Silo's tonal concept...no wonder, at least you would have to change also to a 500k pot to have a Crunch Lab sound not too dark.

To increase the "punch" from the Silo bridge position, I would recommend either the AirZone or the AT-1, maybe also the Breed Bridge (all up to personal sonic preference). With these you wouldn't have to add too many changes to the Silo concept and character. But after all, there's still that personal, individual thing to it.....

P.S.: ....and yes, pics please - no pics, no guitar ;)

I'm going in a different direction with my '93, I ordering a set of D. Allen "Johnny Blades"... I've got the higher gain end covered with my other guitars.

Hey Fred- interested to see what you think of those. I have the Lawrence blades in an AL (L45s). Wondered how those compare.

I have a Silo Special that I replaced the pickups with DAllen HSS set. They are awsome pickups. With a few other mods, push pull pots etc. I can get just about anthing I need out of this set up.

I have a 99 Silhouette Special with S-S-S set up. I loaded mine with DiMarzio Hum Cancelling Area pickups. N-Area 67, M-Area 58 and B-Area 61. This satisfies ALL my wants or needs for a Strat !

Later I may replace the neck & bridge pickups with DiMarzio Injectors and put my Area 67 in the mid. Ala Paul Gilbert..LOL

I replaced my 36th Anniversary in my Silo Special with a Duncan Invader. I thought the 36th was a bit muted and the Invader has more top end and punch. Very pleased with it so far.
