Hi,

has anyone changed the bridge pickup on silhouette special HSS?
Stock pickup is great but I need more power to play some prog metal stuff.
Advice anyone? I would be oriented to something like Dimarzio tone zone.
Please share your experience

Hey there:

Look for my thread "OK, I've kept you in suspense long enough..."; it has the link for my new Sil Spec, where the cat pulled the stock PU and replaced it with some DiMarzio in the bridge. I can supply you with his email as well, and you two could chat about it as well (I won't be getting 'er until Thursday :()

...also, if you like what you're hearing about it from the boy, let me know...that pickguard and pickups are into storage once I get it. Maybe you could put it to use? ;)

I didn't understand, you bought that modified guitar on ebay? I see it uses Seymour Duncan on bridge, not di marzio. How is it?

I put a duncan distortion trembucker in the bridge and it rawks. I play hard rock and I needed a hotter pup with some growl, but this pup will also give you some nice clean tones as well, the name doesnt do it justice. Dont put a JB in there, they are way too bright in that guitar, not sure about dimarzio options though but they say the distirtion is like a passive EMG 85, they are hot and tight and clean, it will go in all my strat guitars now -

Thanks lock-ny I'll follow your advice. I confirm that JB Trembucker is too bright :)

Any suggestions on a pickup change for a good classic rock sound in the bridge. JB is a great pickup but you guys say to bright. Suggestions. I was thinking cool rails in the middle and neck position.

I changed the single coils in my Silhouette Special, but I will be switching the humbucker to a Tone Zone myself. However last night I just droped a Evolution 2 in my 20th Silhouette, and that thing sounds absolutely AMAZING.

I went to a DiMarzio bridge Breed, and am loving it in all 3 positions, on my rosewood board S. Special. I think I'd go with the neck Breed if the neck was maple, though. I love the stock single coils.

I love the ToneZone in my Silo Spec, very articulate and ballsy and it seems to mesh well with the alder and maple of the guitar. Some people say it's muddy, but I don't find it to be so. It gives a very crunchy rhythm sound, and a very defined, almost open wah pedal sort of lead sound.

Pushing a plexi style amp it sounds absolutely amazing, and gave me the sound I'd always needed a boost pedal to achieve with a guitar-cable-amp only setup. In front of my 6505 it can get a little over the top with higher gain settings (but then again, that amp could get an under wound single coil to sound too gained out) but if you understand that you need to turn the gain down a little more than you would with a PAF type pickup it can sound really sweet and singing, and lends itself really well to smooth harmonic feedback.

It's also important to note that the sound of the TZ is hugely influenced by how far it is from the strings. Keeping it about 1/8 to 1/16 inch away tends to sound best to me, but even a minute adjustment can make the difference between sounding indistinct and sounding articulate.

Anyway, sorry for the long post, but if there;s anything else you'd like to ask about the TZ + Silo Spec combo, I'd be happy to try to answer :D

Tons of cudos for the TZ. Anyone have any sound clips? Any feedback on replacing the middle and neck pickup?

I had a Silo Spec with a Tone Zone loaded in the bridge position. I was very happy with it. Sonically speaking, it made my Slio sound like my Axis. I don't know what the original Silo bridge p/u sounds like, so I don't really know if the difference in sound was the pickup. It could have just as well been my playing on both guitars.

I have two DiMarzio ToneZones in place in two of my Silo Specials. The one in the Candy Red Silo is the Air-version which sound a little more open and clear.

Highly recommend both of them though...
