So I just bought an off the shelf SS in Lava Pear with a black PG. Shipped from Coda Music yesterday. Can't wait.

Was wondering what the deal is with the bridge PickUp? I always thought it was a Paf Pro like on the standard silhouettes but I just read the website and it says custom wound Dimarzio. So is that like the custom wound on the axis or totally different?

I'll hear it soon enough I suppose, but I'm sure someone here can give me the official low down on it.

Pics to follow of course! ;)

Cheers, Dave

Excellent score...I don't recall ever seeing a Lava Pearl Silo Spec in the past...I'm looking forward to the pics.

Wouldn't mind seeing some pics of the purple Super Sport in your avatar as well. :D

Congrat's Dave.

The word I got from Dargin, via Dan (in CS), was that around mid 2005 the Special went from their own DM custom wound to a DM Virtual PAF.

Thanks guys, as soon as I saw it I had to buy it. Matching headstock and rosewood FB. Looks great and was pretty cheap too - new at £1099. They are normally around the £1300-£1400 mark.

Virtual PAF huh? Thanks Candid I'm off to check the Sound clips on that at the DM website.

Can't believe I called it a "Lava Pear"...... That'd be some fruit!

Thanks for that info candid_x.

Not intending to hijack since fuzzracer's SS is presumably newer and this is his thread, but can anyone briefly comment on the pre-2005 pickups with regard to sound or similarity to Dimarzio's stock models?

I've subtly asked this question a few times here, hoping for some official editorial response, but no luck ;).

My Specials are a 2000 and 2001, so both have the DM/MM custom buckers. I've never tried one with the Virtual PAF, but I've always been curious how they compared. I've since converted one to an SSS, and put a Breed HB in the other, so it's not a biggie. Still curious though.

Talking to CS at DiMarzio, they say that it is very very similar to their PAF 36th Anniv. Bridge Model, the DP223.
After getting this information, I bought one of these pickups, and slapped it in a similar Alder bodied guitar. The tone is Very similar, as they said. My SS might have just a hair more high end response.

Thanks for the feedback, DTJPPR. I had a hunch they were very similar if not the same.

great guitar mate. I almost got that same one a few months back. Got a photo of it on my laptop. Must be something to do with being Scottish!!!

Congrats
